Dear All,

Namma Nimma Cycle Foundation is working closely with Transport Department to normalize the fare charges for carrying Bicycle as luggage.

We want to work in 2 phases

Phase 1 :
Regulate the Fares in KSRTC - sometimes the conductor asks 300 - 100 depending on your face value and his appetite to squeeze more.
So we had a initial discussion with the transport department. They have agreed to normalize the same.

We are doing a survey to finalize the services required by the cyclists from KSRTC.
Pls click the link to answer the survey .

Phase 2:

Also include private transport providers.
Expected Output :

No hassle cycle carry facility in KSRTC Buses.

Warm Regards,
Murali,

Thanks Murali,
Great initiative, and I have filed the survey.
Can we do a similar one for the BMTC Cycle racks on the city buses ?

Namma Nimma Cycle Foundation is working closely with the Horticulture Department to enable cycle trails and we are also running the Bicycle Rentals Station inside Cubbon Park.
As you know Cubbon Park was closed to the public during lock down.

We tried to negotiate with the authorities to close the cubbon park for traffic - but we have found that Cubbon Park cyclists are not allowed in the morning from 6:00 AM  and are allowed only when traffic is thrown open from 8:00 AM.

Namma Nimma Cycle Foundation   plans to meet the Horticulture Minister and submit a petition to open the cubbon park from 6:00 AM for cyclists. This has been the rule since 1870 when it was opened to the public. We petition to recall this "Abrupt and Absurd" rule that takes away the freedom of children to cycle in Cubbon Park.

Pls sign the petition and support the opening of the cubbon park for cyclists.

Hi Murali,

Wondering if there is any update on this.

And also, as Parag suggested, anything similar that can be done with BMTC?  Just getting into a BMTC Volvo is very hit/miss... at times, I have had to give BMTC ‘officers’ at ‘starting points’ a good dressing down, before they finally yielded & gave go ahead to a conductor to allow me to board with my cycle... this, at 9/10pm, when the Volvo buses are plying mostly empty.  In one case, when I pressed the BMTC officer to give a specific reason why they were not allowing me to board with a bicycle, he said the cycle might damage something in the bus.

Will really help to have some clear rules.

thx,  -{db}.

Thanks a lot, Murali; really appreciate you / “Namma Nirma Cycle Foundation” pursuing these issues with the KA govt.

Recently, there were reports that in Kochi(?), there has been a decision to allow bicycles on metro; am assuming that includes full-size / non-folding ones.  For the number of cyclists in Bengaluru, we seem to be really behind wrt “bicycles on public transport”.  Since we might be having “bicycle tools”  while cycling, I was wondering if that might pose extra issues while trying to board a metro with a bicycle.

Cycle racks on regular BMTC buses were announced few months back, but other than photos in news reports, have_not seen any bus actually plying with the rack installed.  In case the COVID-19 situation is holding up some of these, hoping that in next 6months, we will get to see these “in action”.

OK !
Metro people believe that I am a REVOLUTIONARY and avoid our request to give space for cycles -
Very hard to convince them to give space for cycles - even to create parking for cycles i  had to get the Delhi Minister to call these guys in Bangalore.
The current MD of BMTC is supportive - let us see ! It depends purely on the official and we lack proper guidelines and implementation plan -
I used to run behind them - now I see my hairs have become grey and i no more try with the same enthu - post covid it has become a necessity hence opening the old chapters and old demands
let us see !

Agree. 1bogie every hour in non peak hours or every fourth train in peak hour is  great option for us on metro.

Need to lobby cycle space in suburban rail now itself including the new train to devanahalli haltstation.

Also I wish if Southern railways & Indian railways make it easier to take bikes in long distance trains. Current process is very cumbersome and also the bikes have to wrapped and kept in luggage wagon and one has to go to station few hours before, no possibility to book cycles as luggage online
( at least I do not know) etc.

2 additional options there.

If you're travelling first class, you can have your bike in your cabin as is.

If you are travelling in 2nd /3rd you can take it in a bike bag and tick it under your seat.

In 2016, I had taken my cycle by train, from Guwahati to Naharlagun, & back.  We were on an organised trip, so the coordinators took care of the logistics.  On the way back, we were late, getting to the station -- luggage car was to be sealed at 1600hrs; we reached at 1900hrs; train departure was ~2200hrs, IIRC -- so the coordinators had told us we would need to take care of things ourselves.

We had to request the station master to allow us to load our cycles in the uggage car; he relented finally.  (luggage care had to be "unsealed / resealed".)  plus, the issue of "wrapping the bicycles".  There was a person from the railway staff, who did it gladly, for some money.

After all that drama, at the endpoint (Guwahati), no one showed up to open the luggage car, so the train went to the shunting zone, with our cycles.  We had to get  some railway staff and get the cycles unloaded from the shunting zone.  Ended up spending 2-3hrs, and lot of energy.  Hosed our plans for that day.

Hope these aspects get sorted out.  The procedures, etc., really are painful.  So many folks would be willing to pay extra, for convenience.

Yes Kochi MEtro has opened its doors for cyclists (any cycle can go in- I strongly believe that it should be thus and no other way)
I don't think there's many other arrangement or sorts - cycle has to go through security check, but otherwise you board as usual (with your cycle) as you would without it, and put it as and where there's space in the coach [space hasn'tt been an issue so far due to the pandemic, should wait and see how it works out once the crowd increases].
So far it has been a huge hit (city is also embracing cyclists a lot more proactively)-on my last visit this Christmas, there were cycling tacks marked out on most main roads (I don't know whether they are officially opened out yet, as most other vehicles were plying over it too as usual)

Nevertheless Kochi is a good example to tell the Name Metro folks (in case it is uncertainty that is the fear/hurdle - not sure if it might help in case of lack of intent)

Really?
Are you saying if I reserve AC 1st class 2 or 3 tier for example from BLR-MYS-BLR,  I can just bike to the railway station and just take the bike inside and into my compartment, keep it and travel?

No additional luggage booking, no wrapping nothing? Is it this simple really? Did you or your friends do it?

It will be useful to me. This time, I biked to mysur and came back using drop off Taxi which was not really expensive (1800rs), but I had to dismantle the bike including removing the handlebar completely to fit in car trunk. I will use this kind of taxi service for major cities as it is not really expensive and can avoid biking to/from Bengaluru railway station, but such one-way taxi service may not be available from small towns that may have railway connection. Rail can be an option in such cases.

Great to hear firsthand, about the Kochi Metro allowing cycles.  Ya, once things open up towards normal, need to see what remains feasible, but they should at least try to keep 3 non-peak time windows, plus more for weekends, to allow cycles.

The inter-city one-way taxi rentals are opening up some very good options now.  One can have door-to-door service, unlike Volvos.  For BLR-Mysuru type travel, it probably is well worth it.  If the taxi has a carrier on the roof, it could take 2 cycles, & make it really cost effective for 2 cyclists.

Yup. I used

With careful positioning, I think two frames with dismantled wheels will fit in the trunk. And wheels can be kept in front of the seat if need be.
Best thing was the door to door service.
