Nokia 8110 4G KaiOS version stuck at 12.00.17.06

I ordered the Nokia 8110 4G online here in Pakistan. It got updated to 12.00.17.06 as soon as I switched it on. However, I can't seem to update it to any later version. When I go to software update section in Settings, I'm told that 12 is the latest available version. I've learned that 16 is the current latest version and there is also support for WhatsApp. Is there any way I can manually update my phone's firmware?

The safest thing to do is wait for the update. You will get it eventually. But if you really want it, dial the code *#0000# and tell me what comes up, and I might be able to try and find a way. But remember, the safest thing to do is wait.

Version 13 has been out for a long time and I still haven't got that. So it might be a long wait which I'm not willing to go through. Here's what comes uo when I dial the code:

But I need to know, do you have a computer and if so what OS does it run?

Well, if you are still stuck on v12 at this point and not gaining updates from v13-16, HMD may well have stopped supporting your specific variant for some reason.

Okay, so on your laptop you need to install ADB (Android Debug Bridge) in order to gain root access on your phone. Our fellow BananaHacker Ivan has already created a video explaining how to do this on Windows, so you can watch that here (remember to enable subtitles).

After installing ADB, come back here and tell me, then we can continue with the process of getting v16 on your device :D

Great! So, don't connect your phone to your computer yet. First we need temporary root access on your device, so to do that open up the website http://r.gerda.tech/ on your phone and press the button. Then dial the *#*#33284#*#* secret code.

Then connect to your PC and in the directory type

.\adb devices

like you said and see if your device is listed there.

After that come back and tell me.

Sorry for taking a long time, let's continue. So, go to this link on your computer and you will find 2 files and a folder. Copy all three onto the SD card and then come back here and tell me.

Copy all three files to your SD card.

Okay, now, with your phone connected to adb, run the command

.\adb reboot recovery

and your phone will reboot into recovery mode.

This next part could be fatal if you press the wrong thing, so do this carefully.

Use the up and down keys to highlight the one saying "Apply update from SD card" and press the power key to select it. That'll open up a file browser for your SD card, and you must navigate to a file called "4bash.zip" and press the power key. Then confirm by selecting "Yes" and hitting the power button, Then it will run a script for a bit, after that click "Reboot phone now". After that come back here and tell me.

 Hmm, that's weird... Could you try running the utility from recovery again? Maybe something went wrong... if it's still saying "Software up to date " then I might need to see the logs and checkout what's going on.

Yes - because all this only helps if there is an update but it doesn't install because of modified partitions... and even then you usually should only repair the really needed partitions and not all and everything...

--> if there just isn't an update yet for your region/device-variant it doesn't help and you now modded your partitions without any reason.

(which might be a problem when a real update gets available for your device...)

There are two possible problems when it comes to updates..

1. update available/downloadable - but install fails because of modified partitions

2. no update available for device-variant

-- the first can be cleared by re-flashing the problematic partitions with clean ones matching the own device.

-- the second not. (for this you would need to switch device-variant -- flashing of 'tunning' and/or modemstX involved - which I don't provide...)

The only 'clean' way --> re-flash your own dumps and wait until the update is officially available for your region/device-variant...

Eveything else would be highly experimental and would involve either manually flashing all neded v16-partitions (and we don't even know which exactly they are) or switching you device-variant on purpose (flashing a bunch of v12-partitions from another variant an modding the tunning-partitions followed by erasing modemst1/modemst2 and praying...) --> both ways aren't really good ideas...

I have the same model phone as yours (just a tiny difference in the variant, which is why I have v16) and I have my old v12 dumps somewhere, I'll send them to you along with some instructions when I find them. Sorry for putting you through all that hassle, I thought it really would work :(

By the way, v16 doesn't bring anything that you can't hack onto your v12 now, so if you wanted something like WhatsApp you can just jailbreak the phone and install it from one of our stores :D

Okay, I'll fix the links when I get time tomorrow. One major thing that I missed out is that you have to backup your system partition, and any other data you need. If you don't, and you mess something up, you might not be able to get back. Nevertheless, I would personally recommend waiting for the update instead. Even if you don't get it, you can always do some API updates and get WhatsApp installed (if that's what you were looking for). But it's your device, so I guess you should have the right to do what you want ;)
