At what age/grade do your elementary/lower schools start their 1:1 program? We use Chromebooks and I'm curious about what grade schools introduce it.

Thanks,
Katty

3rd grade starts 1:1 Chromebooks for us

The school has iPads to share- they are usually not used much before 2nd grade

At Grace, we introduce Chromebooks in 4th grade. The devices are assigned to each student, but they are not allowed to take them home. Same arrangement in 5th and 6th grades. Younger grades use classroom sets of iPads and MacBooks. In seventh grade, students purchase their Chromebooks, so that is the beginning of the actual 1 to 1 responsibility. In 9th grade, students purchase (or bring previously owned) MacBooks as their 1 to 1 device.

Here too at LREI, we introduce 1.1 Chromebooks in 4th grade (after many lessons on digital citizenship, digital footprint, etc.). These same devices will follow them into our middle school and it's in 6th grade they can take them home. This year however was the first year that we had multiple 5th-grade families ask if their child could bring home their devices as they didn't have a dedicated device for them to use at home.

Our 2nd grades share a class set of iPads and some 3rd grade groups also use iPads in smaller reading groups. In high school, students receive a Mac laptop.

Curious how other schools handle damages done to devices. We have an insurance option for families, but surprisingly a lot of families decide not to opt in. It feels like a weekly occurrence that a student brings in their damaged Chromebook, asking for a "loaner".

Thanks,
