Repost for Penny Daughtery, p.daugherty75 at gmail.com

I am trying to find my father and his Azorean birthplace.

Manuel Alfredo Araujo (mother’s maiden name = Maria Souza)
His father: Manuel Alfredo Araujo.
Date of Birth: 1/25 /1099 =/- a couple of years
They emigrated to the USA in 1917(?) and the whole family seemed to have moved to Fairhaven, Mass and then branched out to Fall River and South Dartmouth
The US gov’t changed his name to Manuel Alfred Rogers when he came to the US and he used that name for his whole life.

Names of my relatives:
Antoine Olivera (uncle) -  Married my Aunt Mary - lived in Fairhaven and then Mattapoisett (worked at Laura Mae in New Bedford)
Maria Nunes  (aunt) - lived in So Dartmouth and had an antique business

If anyone knows anything please share with me and I will f/u immediately

Thank you ALL for helping each of us and each other

Penny Daugherty

NOTE FROM CHERI: I have helped Penny privately and have found her father. According to his U.S. Petition for Naturalization (applied through the U.S. District Court in Abilene, TX, on 3 Oct 1944, he was born 17 Mar 1910 in Povoação and left Ponta Delgada to Providence, RI on the S.S. Sinaia on 5 Apr 1926 as Manuel Araujo (Ancestry typed Manuel Hor. Araujo - it's an abstract - cannot see the original handwriting). On his petition, he states he wants his name as Manuel Alfred Rogers. I have also been able to find him residing in NY where Penny was born. Manuel also resided in TX as well.

I am sitting at my desk and tears of incredible JOY are running down my face!!!!!
I have to ‘process’ all this. I just can’t get past WOWW and thank you Jesus. WOW!!!
I know I am being a pushy little person but how do I get his actual birth certificate?
I am just sitting here with goose bumps and tears so I need to compose myself.
How can I say thank you for what I have searched for so very long???
I’ll be back when I can think properly.
This is the BEST EVER gift.
I just called my son, Christopher (he’s at work) and he cried too. And again, thank you Jesus who I have prayed to incessantly and who has shined a light on my Papa and me…so incredibly sorry for babbling

I re-forwarded you the message that I sent to you on Fri, Sep 29, 2023 at 9:28 AM PDT. You were in the Azores then, so the information about you going to the Civil Registry in Povoação doesn't apply. I suggest you contact João Ventura to retrieve your father's baptism certificate.

Good morning -
I’m still happily basking.
I have looked at all my Azorean books late into the night and this morning and I’m just hoping and praying I can return to Sao Miguel this spring and go to Povoacao. We drove to Furnes but we never went any further, although I remember seeing the sign for Povoacao
You’ve alll probably seen all the beauty of the island but Furnes was - at the risk of sounding melodramatic - almost like seeing a bit of heaven, which is interesting because I remember asking my Papa about his home and he used to look kind of teary eyed and he always said it was like Heaven in green by the ocean…I never quite envisioned what I saw in Furnes.

Kathy - you gave me the gift of clarity in my soul 🌈. And Cheri - I will keep your email right in the middle of my bulletin board on my desk always. You lighted the rest of the path that Kathy lit for me☀️ - or perhaps better said that she helped me arrange my brain to collect the puzzle pieces so they made a picture
I thank you both for your care for those of us looking for the way home❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I just had to start my morning thanking you both.
I hope I get to hug you both - just so you both feel my absolute JOY.
Happy Wednesday to us ALL ☀️

Beautiful tribute and sentiment.  I (as well as others)understand exactly how you feel but could have never put it into those beautiful words.  This whole group is all of that.
Can’t wait to hear how you will feel the next time you visit, armed with your new knowledge.     Congratulations and happy searching

Such beautiful words.   And so many of us owe Cheri and Kathy for the guidance and information to attempt our searches.   Adding the travel bug they encourage and have the knowledge to get us started is priceless.  Before I die I want to get my husband to São Roque, Ponta Delgada, Ilha de São Miguel so he can bask in the place of his grandmother and ancestors.  Just a short hop gets us to Santana Madeira where his father was born in 1905.    I am grateful to so many on this site.   Thank you.

We are All family and someday I would love to be able to hug you ALL because if each of you feels like me, this is an incredible miracle to find the piece of each of our hearts that was kind of open and blank...for me, to smell the spices of my Grandma's cooking - was pure heaven-sent memories and to 'hang out' in a supermarket and talk about recipes and ingredients and feel so comfortable with each woman there was BEAUTIFUL! in a way I have no words for. I will be growing pimento peppers this Spring - to be sure.
And now, coming home, I have added the pimientos and a touch of lemon and garlic and my kitchen has taken a step toward a beautiful ambiance..oh yeah!
Please all - understand that my Papa was a chef so food and food preparation, was a very big part of my childhood..I was the 'child sou-chef' for years and now I have rediscovered the "Holy Trinity" of Azorean cooking...Maybe just shell and add some fava beans and toss in some linguica and you have a winner! WOO!
I would like to say, Blessings to us all in our search for family and may we all find those we love.
Penny

Repost for Penny Daughtery, p.daugherty75 at gmail .com (Psst, Penny, you need to post to YOUR thread about your ancestor, not just any thread).

I have calmed down from my hysterical joy and am able to stop gushing for a few minutes – but I have to tell y’all: I have my Papa’s request for naturalization (Blessings to you both: Kathy and Cheri) on my refrigerator along with the picture of the ship he came here. I never want to forget those young and old Azorean people who left a paradise of epic description to make a better life in an unknown world.

And they did!!! (And we, of their future, have benefited from their inestimable courage)

At any rate, please know that I am hoping to go back to the Azores in February (or sometime near there) and go to Povoacao (my Papa’s birthplace) and, of course go all over the island so if anyone needs help – and we can be that help – please let us know and while we are on Sao Miguel we will do what we can.

I know how I felt and how massively blessed I have been by Kathy and then Cheri so in the spirit of ‘paying it forward” we will help with whatever we can.

(I have read so many names that are familiar to me from my childhood in Fairhaven and Fall River that it seems we are all somehow related 🌟)

Happy Monday to all!
