Hello Group
This is my first time posting. I live in Missouri USA, helping friends find their great grandparents.  Here is what I have:
Francisco Garcia:
Born 1834 in Port Azores
Immigrated to the USA in 1849 - I have not determined where he arrived
Settled in California USA
Louisa - born 1850 in Port Azores - I do not have her maiden name
Immigrated to the USA in 1862 - I have not determined where she arrived
Married Francisco in 1862
First child (1862)as well as all 8 born in California USA

Their son Louis Garcia (b 1863)married Amelia Andrade
Amelia born in Port Azores 1878
Immigrated to USA in 1891
They lived their life in California USA

I can follow Louis and Amelia through the census and have newspaper articles that support the marriage of some of their offspring and deaths.
If anyone can help with the Francisco and Louisa Garcia couple I would be so grateful.

Thank you in advance.  Joy Brandon

Hi Joy,
Port is not a place in the Azores.

For research in the Azores, you need to know which island they came from. There are 9 islands. Once you identify the island, you'll need the freguesia- it's like a village. Everything in Europe is organized onthe town or village level.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Cheri,
Thank you for that information.  I have never researched overseas so this will be a huge learning opportunity for me.  I was going by what was stated on our early census records. All the US records that I have found does not give any more useful information.  I'll keep looking!  Thanks!

Joy,

There's a 35 page how-to here, but it's written with using record sources from the turn of the 20th century:

You'll probably have to turn to local records - something like California marriage records. If they lived in a Portuguese area in CA, you *might* be able to find the island. Or the fraternal records. They are explained in the link above.

You're friends will probably have to turn to DNA to help narrow it down. The databases are large enough that we can generally get an island and depending on the island, sometimes, the freguesia.

Thank you!  This helps expand my understanding and search.

Yesterday I was able to verify that Amelia Andrade Garcia and sisters Anna Andrade Nevis, Rose Andrade Trombas, Mary Andrade Abrego, Adelaide Andrade Mendence & Louise Andrade Amarel  are all natives of Faial Azores via a obituary noted of Anna Nevis in 1945 This is a big find and lead
They both have provided their DNA testing.
I will look further into that.
Thank you!

Joy,

Faial, the island? If so, they have only 13 freguesias and a majority are indexed.

This may be a big if, but given the time period, it could be relevant. IF the couple from the Azores was Roman Catholic and after immigrating, baptized a child in the US, the child’s baptism record MAY give the church and freguesia in the Azores where each parent was baptized. I confirmed two great-grandparents’ birthplaces in the Azores because their son, my grand-uncle, had been baptized in Boston. That was the launching point that quickly led to identifying about 7 or 8 more generations back in time for each of them. DNA matches confirmed this family connection (something my cousin matches themselves hadn’t known).

Hope this may be of some use to you - good luck!

Keep looking!!!

Joy, it's the CITCEM database here:

Scroll down to the island of Faial.
Click on the first freguesia, Salão
Next page, where you see the curved arrow, click that.
Next page, click the British flag.

You don't have to use diacritics, but you must use modern Portuguese spelling.

Castelo Branco and Flamengos are not in this index and need to be searched by hand.
