Hi all,

Hoping someone my have an understanding of some of the record keeping for this part of Sao Miguel.

Specifically I have a question about marriages in Povoacao. I see there are baptismal records from 1570 and Obitos from 1593, but casementos are only from 1712.

Would the marriages for povoacao performed in another jurisdiction prior to 1712?
Are the records lost?
Were they not scanned and uploaded?

Any help or insight would be appreiciated.

Thank You!

The records are lost. Generally, when you see a huge discrepancy like that, it means they are lost :(

I have the same issue for some of my line that are from that area.  I've estimated marriages based on some of the baptism's that I found but there are alot holes.  Do you mind sharing who you are looking for?  I'm wondering if we are connected to same ancestors.

Most of my ancestors are from other parts of the island but a couple of branches go into Povoacao.

In this case I was specifically looking for the marriage of Antonio Machado and Anna Cordeiro.
Unfortunately the baptismal record of their children for the area do not include grandparent names only parents.
So I can't easily find either of their birth records with any kind've confidence.

Information for their son:
Manuel Fernandes Cordeiro (Machado)

Baptism: March 22, 1648; Mãe de Deus, Povoação;

Married: January 8 1675; Povoação,

Spouse: Victoria da Costa Carneiro (her lineage is well documented)

Died: April 10, 1717; Lomba da Maya, Ribeira Grande; viuvo

I would assume both Antonio and Anna would've been born 1615-1630.

Thanks

Dennis G,

There are 3 times period in Catholic records. The further back you go, the less information there is.

What to expect for each record in each time period can be found here:

If the baptism says Manuel was born 1648, start in 1648 and work your way back in time looking for the marriage of the parents. You can also look for the baptisms of  Manuel's siblings to see if the parents had any name changes.
Good luck,

Is it common for the mother's name to be different for the children? For example, I have found a Maria Joaquina but on another child's record it is Maria Rosa. The father's name as well as the grandparent's names are the same for both children.

Nelson A,

I don't know if I'd say common, but it definitely happened.

For some women, you can definitely tell when the name change happened. I had a Anna Rosa who married that way. Once she had babies, she became Anna do Espirito Santo. Then I had ones that I really can't figure out. I have one as Maria Julia/Joaquina/de Jesus. I know her 2nd name started with a J. And it's not like she was Maria Julia for a couple of kids, then switched to Maria Joaquina for the next few, etc. It was completely random to how her name showed up. After having a baby (historically), the mom was on bedrest, so the father and the godparents took the baby to be baptized. My Maria Julia/Joaquina/de Jesus went by Maria and those present were guessing at her middle name.

So yes, women could switch their middle name or some people present may have been doing their best guess as to her middle name.

Wow... That makes it hard sometimes as I am one who wants to make sure all names match.  I have been putting notes in the record when I find them. If and when I find another, I correct the information. We have got to love the Portuguese Naming Game... Thanks for your response.
