Hi Lillian,

It's Sao Miguel island :) San Miguel is one of the Channel Islands off the coast of California. Wrong ocean!

Bettencourt is found with a higher frequency in the central island group. I don't believe it has a little pocket with a higher frequency somewhere on Sao Miguel island :(

She'll be Maria (da) Souza until about 1911 and then they changed the spelling and she'll be Maria (da) Sousa.

Lillian,

You really  need to do a lot more searching in the USA records to find the original village. As Cheri has said before, there are 26 Concelhos on Sao Miguel to try looking! She will be looking for de Souza or in this country probably just Sousa with an 's' with no 'de'. Bettencourt is also de in the Islands or just plain Bettencourt.

I have a Luis Souza’s son change his Surname to Luiz/Luis in the mid 1800s on São Miguel.  From the Ponta Delgada area of San Miguel in the town of São Roque  ( I believe the town was previously called something else). The Souzas went back generations there.
