I read in the book a ilha de Sao Jorge (seculos xV-XVII) , under section a sociedade Jorgense starting in pages 55 and on, that:
Nobility in the azores seized to inherit titles such as Fidalgo, Escudeiro & Cavalheiro  unlike in the mainland.
This was the case with the 1st generation migrants that held those titles in 1500's.
Was it because of the King Phillip and the house of Habsburg deated and took control over Portugal from the house of Avis after the old heirless king Henriques died and so they were stripped of their titles for suporting the failed monarchy?

PS. I know their descendants  kind of retained another form of nobility mixed with a type of democatic election withn the nobility for governing posiotions such as the Capitaos & Sargentos,  for the military and other posts for administrators and judges, right?

I have learned some about the nobility of the Azores Islands. The nobility there was not like it was established in the Mother land - Portugal. It is interesting reading and I try to find material on the subject to learn more. Of course, some of the articles are questionable just like with everything else. I began my genealogy quest for royalty, when my dad was promoted to a position in the military which needed top clearance. Included in the top clearance was an investigation on mom as well. His commanding officer told my dad that mom had royalty in her lineage. I was hooked on genealogy. However, I have yet to find the royal connections we think about when it comes to the king and queen. As said by M ACv2, he stated it correctly. Here is one article I have found that helps:  http://www.researchjournal.yourislandroutes.com/2011/05/azoreans-and-royalty/

Good morning from Canada. Thank you for the information above. I was born in Terceira, I do have some lineage to Sao Miguel. I am assuming that the above also applies to Terceira. I was also wondering about the Belgium connection in Terceira.
With many thanks for any insights.

So several years ago I was sent a message for me to look up my tree in Familysearch.  This came from the husband of a person I met giving a class on Portuguese Genealogy in Alamo, Ca.

He wanted me to know she had passed away.  He knew we were connected from Cedros Fayal.  I had expressed how I wished we can found our connection.  He told me it was all done and I needed to go look at my information and see the nobility we were from.   He had me go into relative finder and OMG  what a surprise  put in https://familysearch.org/tree/person/L6FG-R4F for me

This was all done by the Mormons not me.  I was impressed.!!!  To say the least.

Mandi,
There's some information on the Flemish from Flanders (old name for the Belgium region) on the Azores Genweb. Perhaps someone can provide the link as I am not at home on my computer to look it up.

Liz,
The FamilyTree on FamilySearch is community or crowd sourced. Anyone with an account can add to it. True that the Mormons contribute too. You can click on an event (birth etc) and see if John Doe has been working on it or "FamilySearch" which would be the Mormon contribution. Just an FYI.
