Can someone tell me what this means? I found a record for an ancestor for an Inventario, I take it to mean inventory or probating a will but the death records states that she did not leave a will. What could this be?

Hi Leonor,

The inventory is made after the death to liste all the possession of the dead personn : houses, lands, money, furnitures, clothes and so on.
It is to the shering out the heirs.

Hi Leonor,

I did a lot of inventory work last summer there.

As Philippe said, it's an inventory of their stuff. They do list children, grands, greats. And it was kind of interesting to see what they had for time period too.

Every time I requested an inventory, they told me that they are private and not to be posted on the Internet (they saw me taking pictures with my cell phone). I said OK. I understand that some of the inventories (say the one from 1920s) could name a kid who is alive today (they'd be pushing 100), but the ones from the 1800s would not have anyone alive. So all I could do is honor their request because I want continued access to that record set and so do many genealogists.

Portugal is part of the European Union and they have the newer General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR). Many countries are becoming concerned about the privacy of their citizens so they are creating rules and regulations for privacy. It's probably why they asked me not to post anything on the Internet. The GDPR is just a little over a year old, so I'm hoping as time goes on, they will adjust for things like older historical records, where no one alive today is mentioned in them.  Cheri

Hi Cheri,

I'm assuming that the only way to view the inventory is on location. There is one for my Great Grandfather that I really want to see - there's a confusing story about how and when he died. I haven't been able to find the obito for him and hoping that the inventory will give some hints especially if the children are named.

Mary Ann,
Some of the inventories contain the obito. It depends on the time period. I remember the more recent ones (1900 onwards) had the obito in them. I'm looking at one from 1932. No cause of death is listed on that obito. The inventory lists all the kids (they are adults) and where they are living (even the ones who have emigrated and are in America. And to whom they are married).

You could try emailing the archive there. However, they won't give you copies of the whole thing. THEY will chose what they think you should see. They'd probably give you the obito page and the descendants page(s). I've got inventories that are 28 pages and some are 141 pages. They don't want to be copying all that, so I get it, but only you know what could be a clue to you (as you are researching that family) and they aren't thinking that way. Give it a try and let us know. The paper with their contact information says bpar.pdel...@azores.gov.pt, but the web site lists this one which I think is the archives floor: sala.l...@azores.gov.pt

Interesting. If I was to go there, I would find this inventory by looking up the location on this record?

Leonor,

When I was there, they said this was their Card Catalog. I asked if it was all 9 islands, and they said yes. However, it seems to be used mainly by the archives in Ponta Delgada: http://www.arquivos.azores.gov.pt/

I search for "inventario freguesia" and that usually pulls it up. Sometimes there are other records mixed in. If your freguesia has more of a unique word, you don't have to type the whole name. I can type "inventario quente" and get the inventories from Ribeira Quente. You don't need the diacritcs either to search.
Happy hunting,

Hi,
I recently ordered a similar file for the inventory for one of my gggp.  I emailed a copy from the archives very much like the one you found to show exactly what I was looking for.  They wrote back with my options.  I opted for digital copies at the cost of $57 Euros wired to them, receiving the file to a drop box, 87 pages within one week.

Copies can also be mailed to you at a lesser cost.

Thanks everyone!
This is very interesting. I was a little confused because the obito said there was no will, this lady left 8 kids and I believe she died from complications of childbirth. She died about a month after giving birth and her baby died 2 months after she did. Her husband then remarried a few months later to a lady younger than his own older children. This is probably what brought this up.

Good to know. They mentioned no cost to me and indicated it would only be a few pages. So glad to know there are options!
