Hello all,

I have been following this group for awhile, and not contributing very much.

I do want to ask a few questions.  Do many of you have family trees that link our Azores genealogy with Italian, namely southern Italian families?  My DNA shows that I have some Iberian connections, but it must go really far back in time. The ancestry that I am familiar with are all from Eastern Europe (Hungary, Austria, Balkland, etc.) and Southern Italy and the Middle East (Sicily, Greece, Northern Africa, Syria, etc.).  With all of the conquering armies a long time ago, there must have been some mixed in with my ancestors.

The Iberian Peninsula consists mostly of Spain and Portugal with a little bit of south west France, as I recall. No Italian is considered to be from the Iberian Peninsula.

Sharon R,

The only Portuguese-Italians are the ones who have a parent (or grandparent) who was Portuguese or Italian. So it's a known person from that country. As Kathy said, the Iberian Peninsula is mainly Spain and Portugal.  Cheri

Sharon and Kathy,

My understanding is that the people of the Iberian peninsula had contact with North Africa and the countries and islands in the Mediterranean.   There would have been interbreeding of course.   

Using FTDNA you get the cM of the segment length of shared DNA.  I think comparing the matches  from there would help give some idea of whether other families have the same thing and perhaps how recent the  matches are.  

Does FTDNA have a function that shows the origin countries of matches? Something like Ancestries?   I haven’t found it.    

In closing, my husband‘s DNA origins keep changing and fine tuning as it gets more users to compare to.   His earlier ITALIAN is gone and more Iberian Peninsula is the result.   I suspect a “full” Italian would have similar changes.  We haven’t found any links to the small but significant bit of European he has.  His grandfather (1869-1947) born on São Miguel was quite tall and does not look very Portuguese.   We thought we would find a hint by now.

Where? On FTDNA? If they opted in. You click on MyOrigins, then on the map. Look in the lower left corner:

On My Heritage, click on the match name, let it load, scroll to the very bottom:

On Ancestry, click on the match, then the Ethnicity tab (my dad's 1st cousin, also 50% Portuguese):

Living DNA is only 3 or so years old. They are based in England and are hitting that market. My dad only has 2 matches there and neither is Portuguese. I clicked on Ancestry in the left column, then Family Matching at the top. Then I picked "View Profile" of my dad's top match. By-the-way, this is the same screen shot for BOTH matches, as it appears to be under development:

23 and Me, click on the match and scroll down. I did not test my dad here. So here's me and a 2nd cousin who is also 1/4 (25%) on paper (I can't screen shot the whole thing):

So yes, the major companies have it, the newcomer (Living DNA) is developing it. You just gotta get used to each site and where to look.
