I’m trying to identify my 2nd great grandfather’s siblings.

Hi Murphy,

That's a lot of kids to go through and the links are not working (404 File Not Found).

If the kids are spaced apart correctly (no babies born 6 months apart or something that is impossible) and the parents are Antonio da Silva (Requinho) and Roza Jacinta, and some of the godparents match, then you have the right kids.

Requinho is an alcunha (nickname) meaning "little one." So it will appear sometimes in the records depending on if that particular scribe/priest wanted to include it or not.

I fixed the links and gave basic translations in red.  All six of their children (including your 2GGF) have the same godfather, José Jacinto da Costa who appears to be their mother's brother.  They are definitely siblings.

Emilia Born on 2 Oct and baptized on 2 Nov 1862.  Same parents.  Paternal GP Jacinto da Silva and Jacinta Maxima.  Maternal GP Francisco da Costa ? and Clara de Jesus.  Godparents José da Costa ? (same as before?) and Damaria Candida.  Side note is just that a certificate of this record was made (I think in 1886)

Antonio Born on 10 Feb and baptized on 26 Feb 1865.  Same parents.  Same GPs except Maternal GM given as Jacinta Rosa instead of Jacinta Maxima.  Same godfather but this time godmother is his wife Damazia? Candida.  The first side note says he was issued a "cedula" (an ID document) in 1924.  The second note says he died in the Matriz parish of this concelho (Matriz da Estrela, Ribeira Grande).  The date of death looks to me like 8 Jun 1941.

Can you also tell me what the side notes say?

You are now late enough for the baptisms to give grandparents names.  Hopefully that works out with what you already have.  I am still not sure what that name is after "Costa" on the godfather and maternal grandfather.  It looks like Salia but I am not familiar with that.  I hope this helps.

You can learn to "read" the records too. Many of us had to learn to "read" as we are not native speakers.

At the bottom is a link that takes you to a line by line, full translation of different types of documents. They all follow a format. You are in the late 1800s which is a good period to learn!

They married 19 May 1890.

Bento is 51, widower or Margarida de Jesus who died in the Sao Pedro church of Ribeira Seca in Ribeira Grande. Bento is a native of the same, son of Joao Carreiro and Rosa de Jesus.

Jacinta da Conceicao is 40, single, native of this freguesia, dau. of Antonio da Silva and Roza Jacintha.

I can pick out names, dates and locations sometime, but when I can’t I will spend hours trying. I even try using google translate sometimes, but I still miss things with that. Nevertheless I appreciate all the help I can get, even if I’m just looking for confirmation of what I think I see or help finding what I know should be there. Thank you again
