I am trying to help someone locate the island and freguesia  their gg grandfather was from in the Azores.  His name was Manuel Robello, that is the spelling  for past 100+ years, not Rebelo.  His wife's surname was Henrietta da Silva, may have been Enriquetta.  Manuel  immigrated to Pahala Hawaii. with his father Francisco or Francisco Jose Robello.  They arrived in Hawaii  possibly  1865-1873. Manuel moved to San Leandro which believe is is Alameda County and died there around 1950-1955, age about 90, and is buried possibly in Hayward CA. He had a brother named Joseph. I know there are alot  of great researchers in this part of California  and hoping someone may recognize this family.  The 1900 census in Hawaii shows a Henrietta aged 16 married to a Emanuel Robelo age 27.  Thanks, Herb

I checked both the Bob De Mello and the Edgar Knowlton book. There is no Francisco or Francisco Jose Robello or Rebello immigrating to HI with a son, Manuel. :(

Report (and edit) for Debbie Mendonca, jessdebmendonca at gmail dot com

Edit: There's a tree on Ancestry.com.

Post:
Manuel Vardasco Robello (1864-1955)

That is from a family tree.  They named their son Joseph after his brother.    Manuel’s dad was Jose.  Wife was Henrieta Florida de Silva.  I’m not finding Manuel’s grave on Find a Grave.

His son used Joseph Robello Vardasco on his grave. He was born in Pahala, Hawaii around 1901 or 1903.   Buried in Hayward, Ca.

Cheri, you might look for the last name Vardasco for the father.

Thanks Debbie

yes I am familiar with this family using the name Vardasco. According to the 1930 California census Manuel Roballo and his wife Andrietta not Henriquetta were living in San Leandro with their children including Joseph. Manuel’s father Francisco or maybe it was Jose Francisco had come over to Hawaii from one of the Azores Islands but no one can determibe which one. Maybe he used Vardasco  instead of Roballo when he came over?

From Portuguese Immigrants to Hawaii compiled by Edgar C. Knowlton, Jr, page 375:

Vardasca, José Rebello, age 40, Monarch '93, Sao Miguel
Maria de Jesus, 38 wife
Children: Manoel 9, José 3; Francisco 1/2

NOTE: The "a" is typed on the end of Vardasca. That's not my typo. And it's typed as Rebello, so again, not my typo. And it says Monarch 1893, so not my typo again.

NOTE 2: The Monarch sailed from Sao Miguel on 29 March 1882 (NOT 1892) arriving in June. Those dates are from the Bob De Mello book and have been crossed out and written over, as there's errors there too.

There's nothing on this Vardasco/a family in the Bob De Mello book.

The Vardasca/o family from the Knowlton book doesn't entirely fit with the ages in the previous message. You need to decide if it's the right family or not.

That's for Herb. I'm not researching the guy. The dates are way off from the original immigration of 1865-1873, and if Manuel dies in 1950-1955 at the age of 90, then he was born 1860-1865. Still doesn't fit what I found. So Herb and his friend have more work to do. It's the closest I can find, but it's like putting a square peg into a round hole.

thanks Margaret but something is still not clicking. Manuel Roballo was 62 years old during the 1930 California census and Andrieta was 44. If his age was correct at 62’ he would have been born in 1868 and upon his arrival in 1893 on the Monarch would have been  15 years old not 9. Those ages were often wrong but usually only by a year or  two maybe 3 but not 6. Still it is a very promising lead. Many thanks to you and Cheri.

No problem. Herb did see it. So he'll have to reconcile it with his friend's information :)

Hi guys,
Just remember that Roballo or robalo as it is spelt now is the name of a fish, sea bass in English.
One of my mother’s best friends  married name was “Sardinha” (Sardine).
As in English we have surnames such as Salmon and Sturgeon.
Hope this helps,
Marcos
