Hi guys,

I'm not sure if this is allowed, but I'm sort of at the end of my rope on this search.  I've been trying for years, but a combination of my terrible reading of records and a lack of information have got me to this point.  My great-grandmother was an unmarried domestic worker who had 5 children out of wedlock, so it's been tough.  Here's what I have.  Anything highlighted is oral family history.

Maria De Lurdes Dias
June 5, 1906 - 1947
Born: Urzelina (Or Ribiera Grande/or Seca)
Occupation: Housekeeper
Children: Helena (1927) Laurentino (1929), Ilda (1930), Fernando (1931), Raul (1947)
Buried: Sao Mateus Churchyard

Parents: Manuel Jorge Dias, Josefina Dias (Victorino)

Worked for Jaime Noronha Soares, Urzelina.

Anything at all would be amazing.  She's the reason I started this years ago, and is easily both the most difficult and most important person in it.  Also, anything on Laurentino would also help.

Thanks!!

Hello Brian,

Have you done any DNA testing? If you do a Family Finder Test with Family Tree DNA, it is possible see which village your matches are from by comparing trees. I take it you are interested in finding who are the father (s) of your Great Grandmothers children.  The family finder is on sale until Nov 30 for $59. There are other DNA tests on sale and perhaps a Y-DNA test could be helpful if your direct male line is to one of her male children. You can learn more here:  https://www.familytreedna.com/

Good Luck.

Rick

Brian,
According to the Sao Jorge Marriage Index on saojorgegenealogy.org, Manuel Jorge & Josefa Vitorina married 4 May 1903 in Urzelina, Sao Jorge. So, I would look for Maria's birth there first and check the baptismal records on the CCA for births of her siblings. Then, as Rick has stated, you need to do the FamilyFinder dna test on FTDna.com. This is the only way you will have a good idea who the father(s) of Maria's children may be.

I actually just did the MyHeritage one last week.  Is the Familyfinder a better option?

Hi Brian M,

Both My Heritage and FTDNA use the same DNA chip. Once you get your My Heritage results, download the raw data and transfer to FTDNA and get your matches for free. If you want their tools, it's $19. Then join the Azores DNA Project and Rick or I will be able to point you in the right direction. If you need help, just ask one of us.

FTDna is where the Azores Project resides. Most of the people on the Sao Jorge FB page have tested FTDna and you should get many matches from there. I would imagine that MyHeritage will also give you matches.

There seem to be more people of Azorean descent on FTDNA than My Heritage. FTDNA was founded in 2000 and the Azores DNA Project in 2005. I think My Heritage started DNA testing about 4 or 5 years ago. So it makes sense that more Azoreans are on FTDNA.

Hi Brian,

As Cheri said, Family Finder on FTDNA.com let’s you upload your My heritage DNA for free.   Start there because you’ll increase your matches that may have only tested on Ancestry and 23andMe, etc.

I haven’t figured out which of my family members’s DNA records I should pay the $19 to unlock  extra services, but that is a great deal— it will be my European dad or myself, I think.   (My husband is from São Miguel and we paid for the full program for him.)

It is a great resource.

Deb
