Hi Everyone!

I am new to the group! I am looking to see if I can find some information on my family from Faial. We know almost nothing about our family before they immigrated and I am taking my dad to the Azores this year as it is his dream to experience his roots. Anything would be great!

On one side:

My great grandmother came to Jamestown RI, via Providence in 1917. Ana de Lacerda, from Cedros, Faial. Born 1899. Daughter of Jose Silveira de Lacerda & Maria de Avila de Lacerda de Escobar.

We think Jose was the son of Maria Clara de Conceicao de Lacerda 1874- 1901, and the grandson of Rosa Maria Luis.
My great grandfather changed his name when he came here so all we know is his last name is Antone R Frank. We think it was previously Rosa however.

On the other side:

My great grandparents:  Gabriel Silveira Faria 1884-1936 Faial (arrived in 1903 in new bedford)  married to a Maria or Mary F Moitoso 1890 (Praia do norte Faial) arrived in 1910.

Gabriel's parents were Joao Silveira de Faria and Angella? 1835 ish for births.

Mary's parents were Fransisco Garcia Moitoso 1857 and Filamena Francisca Gomes Pereira Moitoso 1862 (daughter of Manuel and mariana).

We know we are cousins to the Dutra family who is also from Faial and now in Jamestown. This is what we could piece together.

Thanks!

Hi Elise,

The Azorean government has digitized their vital records from 1910 going back in time. Some you will be able to find easily.

Anna de Lacerda - you have parents, a place, and a birth year. Search for Anna born to those parents in 1899 here: https://tombo.pt/f/hrt04

On Gabriel Silveira Faria born 1884 and immigrated 1903 from Faial - Search the port of Horta in 1903:

Hope that's a start for you.

Hi Elsie,

I also have a line of ancestors from Cedros. I keep the CITCEM home page (site that Boyd references above) bookmarked. Even though it’s not primary information, as I’m a beginner at this, I find it helps me to get an idea of where and when to look for more info. It has a user-friendly interface, covers quite a few parishes in the Azores, and you can select among various languages to search in.

Happy hunting and have a great time visiting the Azores!

Is this Gabriel Silveira Faria's family? This info might help you find the records Cheri directs you to. There are errors in the database but it's a good place to start.

Hi, Elise. Using the CITCEM database, I have been able to create a 15 generation Ahnentafel (equivalent to a pedigree chart) for Ana’s family in Cedros. It clarifies the names for which you had questions.

I also created a six generation chart for Gabriel and a five generation chart for Maria in Praia do Norte. The charts for Gabriel and Maria could not be combined because they did not marry in Praia do Norte. They are listed in the church records only by their first names as children of their parents.

I am 99% certain I know the correct Antonio Francisco da Rosa  who would be Anna’s husband. According to his baptismo his birthdate is actually March 15, 1889, not March 28, 1889. He is the same person you already have in your tree on Ancestry.  So, I made a 16 generation chart for him too. I will tell you more about him later.

Please note that the spelling of names in the CITCEM records represent modern spellings instituted after 1911 and are not the spellings you will find in the original records. For instance, your great grandmother always spelled her name Anna, but the modern spelling is Ana.

Because the lists were generated by software instead of coming from static pages, the links may not be persistent and won’t work for you or could develop link rot with time I will tell you how to recreate the lists yourself. You will be able to generate other lists you might want too.  I just hope that the links I give you will work!

But first, I  would suggest you and your dad watch Joao Ventura’s zoom presentation to the Santa Cruz (California) Public Libraries that takes  a deep dive into the history and culture of the Azores and explains about things like naming patterns and the origins of names and about what genealogically relevant records exist for you to search. Be sure to watch the question and answer section. Even experienced researchers will be interested in what he has to say about possible future filming of records near the end of the video. I found some common situations in your family that his video will explain.  Below is a link to the YouTube video.

Descendancy Charts

Descendancy charts give full church details on everyone in the family who descended from one line of your family. I like generating these charts from my genealogy software.

Below is an example of how detailed a descendents chart can be. This chart is only going back on one line at four generations. Someone further down in Anna’s Ahnentafel would have a remarkably longer list:

Descendentes de José Silveira de Escobar, no. 16 on Ana’s Ahnentafel Chart

Example of part of Ana’s Anatafel:

Antepassados de Ana _____

Até à 16ta geração.

Geração 1

1 - Ana _____

Geração 2

2 - José Silveira de Lacerda +

3 - Maria de Ávila de Lacerda de Escobar -1901

Geração 3

4 - José Silveira de Lacerda -1899

5 - Maria Clara Da Conceição de Lacerda 1838

6 - Custódio Pereira de Ávila de Escobar

7 - Francisca Luísa de Ávila de Escobar 1842

Geração 4

8 - João Silveira de Lacerda 1800-

9 - Dª. Angélica Rosa -

10 - Ambrósio Francisco -

11 - Rosa Maria 1804-1876

12 - Manuel Silveira de Escobar Goulart

13 - Rosa Clara de Ávila Do Coração de Jesus 1807-

14 - António Silveira de Escobar -1891

15 - Quitéria Luísa Da Silveira de Escobar -

Etc. for 11 more generations. Each person’s name links to a page of their own.

CITCEM GeneWeb 4.10 Software –

How  to create ancestry charts and descendant lists as well as family surname lists.

First, you must find the person you are looking for. The links I gave you to Ana, Antonio, Gabriel, and Maria will work. So, you can skip this step for them.

  1. Go to   http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/genealogias.html

  2. Choose a parish by finding the island, the council, and then clicking on the parish on the right.

  3. On the first page for the parish, click on the curved arrow below the coat of arms.

  4. On the next page, choose one of the radio buttons directly under the search box in the center of the screen.

    1.  “nome apelido ou nome público ou alias” = a full name

    2.  “nome”  = a first name only

    3. “Apelido” = a last name only (not everyone with the same last name is related. You will get a list of several different families. You must watch the numbers in front of each individual family line to stick to the right family.)

  1. Gabriel is an unusual name. So I was able to use his first name and find his parents in the list of four families who had a son names Gabriel with no surname:

? 1884 filho de João Silveira de Faria e Angélica Rita was one of the four.

  1. Typing in Gabriel’s father’s complete name offered  the same couple as shown above as one of the possibilities given..

  2. Typing de Faria as a surname finds the Gabriel’s parents as a couple buried in the results.

  3. Using Silveira did not work well at all for this family.

Odd thing.  I searched “Faria” (8 branches) and “de Faria” (29 branches) separately and got different lists. But I accidentally mistyped Faria as Fria and I got a page for” Faria, de Faria” (32 branches). Very strange, a software glitch. Try more options until you find what you are looking for!

[How do other people on this list search these records?]

Once you find the names you are looking for, you can look at the personal record for each person. Each person shown on a results page has a hyperlink to a page of their own.

The personal record gives all the information that was found on that individual in the parish records for that one parish.  Usually, on the top left are the person’s parents. In the center is the person with his or her personal church information followed by marriage information, if it exists, and the person’s spouse with his or her personal information. Below the couple you will find their children.

Creating special lists with GeneWeb 4.10 software from a personal page

In small print below the family information on the personal page is a list of applications you can use to create an ancestry chart, a descendancy chart, a list of family surnames, and, as they are applicable, names of siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews, etc,  I think the siblings, etc. are better searched by going back a generation and doing a descendancy chart.

To use the applications, choose one of the options at the bottom of the page:

 Antepassados, Descendentes, Primos, etc

A new page appears that gives  more options for searching on the topic you choose. There are many possible reports you can create. I will only talk about the three main searches I use.

After choosing Antepassados/Ancestors or Descendentes/Descendants go to the top of the next screen and choose the bottom option in the dropdown menu at the top of the page to choose the optimum length of generations available. The number of generations is different for each person. Then click OK. You have your list.

To get a surname list click on Antepassados at the bottom of the screen, then on the next screen,  click on the radio button in front of the words “Lista de apelidos.” below the dropdown menu at the top of the page. Choose the optimum number of generations in the dropdown menu and click OK. You have a list of the surnames that appear in your Ahnentafel along with the number of times the name appears.

Clicking on a surname in the results list shows a graphic of where the name appears in the family tree.

These are just people in one of  your direct line. You will have other people in your family who are related by marriage, not blood, and you will have all those aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. who are not in your direct line. The branches spread. They are shown in descendancy charts.

How to Number an Ahnentafel  – American Ancestors

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPUTVjzhzc8

Understanding Ahnentafel Charts.

Ahnentafel is German for ancestry table. It contains the same information found on a pedigree chart except it is organized in a neat row of names instead of a spread out mess that is hard to read beyond a few generations.

Like the pedigree chart, the ahnanentafel is just a list of direct ancestors, but in the lists you create here have hyperlinks to each individual’s personal page to see the person’s wider family.

Anyone can be number one on the list, just as on a pedigree chart.  After that, men are always even numbers, women always odd.  To find ANY person’s father, just double the person’s number. The mother is the father’s number plus one.  So, the father of number 1 is (1X2) or 2 and the mother 3.  The father of number 2 is (2X2) or 4 and the mother 5. Working backwards to find children, the child of number 4 is  (4 divided by 2) or 2 and the mother’s child is (5-1 then divided by 2) or 2. (The parents share the same child anyway.)

When you get to big numbers like 1052 you can still go forward and backward by the same method.

I did proofread this email, but I am sure I have some typos and non sequiturs. Forgive me! Let me know if I can be clearer.  Or if someone sees a mistake or can offer better information, please do. I left out plenty of details. It is too much to write in an email.

I will send you another email, Elise, with the personal information I found about your family.
