Hi
I accidentally erased the Index of Ernesto do Canto! I was able to recover a few that I had in old emails but still lost some.
Anyone able to share them if have them?

Cheri,

Can you tell us a bit about this index. Was this a book he wrote, is it available online, is it accurate, etc.

Thanks, Fernando

Hi Fernando,

They are manuscripts that are bound into books. Canto did not do all freguesias nor all families. It seems that he did more prominent families or families that he was interested in.

His indices are not online. Are they accurate? Well, he was a human and we all make errors. He was interested in genealogy though, so he probably tried hard.

Here is a page from one of his indices. Canto's handwriting is the nicer one. Rodrigo Rodrigues (he writes with more of a scrawl in a darker print) had gone though and tried to amend, add to, and sometimes correct (this one shows no corrections, only additions):

Thanks Cheri! So to be clear, the index listed is not for all marriages in that church for the years. He only has “important” marriages listed as maybe that’s the lines he was researching? This still maybe helpful, so how do I get a copy of the manuscripts?

Thanks Fernando

Fernando,

Correct, it's not all marriages (or baptisms) in that church for all the years. Yes, what he considered important or what he was researching. Rodrigo Rodrigues added to some of them, but not all. I have the Achada one and it looks like Rodrigo Rodrigues attempted to make that one more complete (from the top of my head, about 168x-1729).

Many years ago, I was able to somehow talk the librarian into copying the 20 or so pages of Achada for me. As for the rest of his indices, you have to go there. Marcio Borba mentioned something about scans of them, perhaps he could elaborate more.

Thanks for the info. I could use the Achada copy if you don’t mind posting. Does anyone else in this group have a copy of the other churches?

To be more specific, does anyone have the Vila Franca manuscripts? Thanks Fernando

I only typed up what the film did not cover. So the earliest ones. I think it was Sao Miguel Arcanjo. Not sure if I have anything for Sao Pedro.

Indices for Sao Miguel Arcanjo for baptisms, marriages, and deaths exist from 1800 to about 1900:

I thought Terri Santos typed up a marriage index for Sao Pedro and gave it to the Azores GenWeb. I don't see it here though:

Hi Terri,

Hmmm, I followed your instructios and this is at the bottom of the page. I don't see any index listed here:

I tried the refresh in case my pages were cached. That didn't work. I'll ask Kathy when I see her in about 10 days.  Thanks, Cheri

It's there.  Click on the Sao Miguel Index sub-menu instead of just Sao Miguel

I'll ask Kathy. Without screenshots, I'm just not seeing what you are seeing. Maybe you guys are not using a computer and that's the problem.

Ok, think I see the confusion. The said index is not on the Tomba site, it is on the on the World Gen site here. Scroll to bottom:

Those are not Canto's indices. Those are indices contributed by genealogists (THANK YOU)! I can click on your link, but I need to know how to NAVIGATE to it. I will ask Kathy in 10 days when I'm in Salt Lake and she can watch me (mis)navigate. Because clicking on the map, scrolling down to Sao Miguel and clicking on the island just isn't bringing it up for me.

Go Home site- http://www.worldgenweb.org/azrwgw/> at top blue index, hover over Maps, databases, indexes> scroll to Sao Miguel blue bar and hold> wait for Sao Miguel indexes to appear as pop out, then click> scroll to bottom where Sao Pedro, Vila Franca database appears.

Duuuuh! Sorry, I've been updating screen shots for Salt Lake and because the menus don't "stick" on a PC, I've been doing the screen shots the other way, by clicking on the map. So that became my new habit. LOL

Terri, thanks for doing the index. Where or how did you get the Canto index? Do you have the index for Matriz? Thanks Fernando

There are the Canto indices (which are NOT online - you have to go to the archive in Ponta Delgada to view them) and there are indices created by Terri Santos and others who slogged through the records, one at a time, painstakingly recording all the information for us to use. The indices created by Terri and other genealogists will generally cover ALL marriages (or baptisms, etc), whereas Canto did extracts of only prominent families or families that interested him. So the genealogist created indices are probably better :)

Some priests created indices themselves. I've seen them in the back of the books. Some parishes have separate indices. Sao Miguel Arcanjo has a separate index for baptisms, marriages, and deaths, and it starts in 1800. You can access them through Tombo.pt.
Good luck,

The reason I’m curious about the Canto index is because the list that Terri compiled for S Pedro has names on the Canto index that were not on the CCA books. Do the archives allow copying (photographs, photocopies)? Thanks Fernando

Yes, Terri's index is better than Canto's because it includes everybody. And Canto may have had access to records from 100 years ago that are not available today. Both Terri and Canto were human and although they don't want to make mistakes, a few were probably made.

As for copying, it depends. When I was copying the inventories (taking pictures with my cell phone) they told me that may NOT post them anywhere on the Internet. So I had to say OK to that and respect their wishes, as I wanted the information. So I guess it depends what you are copying and from what time period.

Thanks for explaining Cheri. And yes... i have already noticed some of my own mistakes...ie... writing ‘Antonio’ instead of ‘Antonia’ under the brides name.
I want to continue with the next index years at some point and I’ll try to do better!
But for now.... its off to the parade to celebrate the Raptors victory!!! 😁
