I`m trying to get some clarity for one Maria de Jesus in my files.  She married and died in Sao Miguel Vila Franca do Campo.
Her death record on 10 July 1896 states she died at the age of 53 years old.  That makes her birth year c.1843, but that would make her 11 years old at marriage.

OOPS...Pressed post too quick and I wasn`t done writing....
In the baptism record I found below i found that she was from Sao Sebastiao in Ponta Delgada along with a brother Joao. But both children were baptised in different places I think.
Can anyone share some clarity to what might be going on here.
Thanks
Terri Santos

I think you should post her death and marriage records. Cheri

Hi Terri,

What makes you assume that this exposta is the Maria de Jesus you are looking for?
My guess is, either you found diferent Marias, or her death records that she was 53 years old, «pouco mais ou menos», meaning she could be older than 53.

Please post the marriage and death record as Cheri asked, so we can take better conclusions to help you.

Terri,

The record states the different dates and places of baptism for the Joao and Maria, who were both Expostos; Joao on Mar 9th 1834 baptized same day in Candelaria.  Maria baptized in Sao Sebastiao de Ponta Delgada … days of of the month of January of 1844.

The document is a legitimization record for these two exposto children on their father’s deatch bed as declared in the hour of his death recognizing them and marrying/receiving their Mother ……… marriage … book 8 of this Parish pages 113….

It also goes to say the mother also recognized them as her own children…

Record signed and dated June 11 1845

Here's the marriage record I found in SM-VFC for Francisco and Maria.  Here it mentions Sao Sebastiao, Ponta Delgada for her again.

this is the death record for Maria

Seems to be the same person, but when I do the math....she is 11 years old at marriage..

Terri,

Did you find every single kid for Joao Travassos and Josepha Marianna? You know every family needs AT LEAST 3 Marias! LOL

This is the only Maria born to Joao and Marianna that I found in the index.
If she was baptized in Ponta Delgada, so then I'll look there....perhaps this couple lived there too?

The index was made by a human and humans can make mistakes. Look at all the kids and look for gaps between kids. Then search those gaps by hand.

I'm suspicious that there was only ONE Maria!

Terri, also search for Maria's parents death records, to see if the number of children is mentioned.

Terri,

It’s good to do your own  search to verify but you will be searching in vain, if indeed this is the couple you are working on.  They only had 3 children (Umbelina, Joao and Maria] plus one unborn child at the time of the father’s death.  Umbelina was already married by the time the parents were wed.

Here’s the marriage record on the death bed of Joao Travassos and Josefa Mariana, right sight.  Look at the bottom where you will see the named children the couple had between them.

I have ancestors married at 12 and 13 years of age.
