I am working on some baptisms in Ribeirinha, Ribeira Grande, and this Record on page 28 (right side) has me puzzled, It starts with Jose filho ligtime digo then Jose, then two words which I me having difficulty with, . then filho legitima and so on, So what does this mean?

It would not be that the father died as the couple had two other children after this one.

I just checked the family of the record you posted Bill with the "post Terciam" There are nine children I have found with two Maria's before the one you found. It has me wondering if it has what was done in later records where the added "first of the name, second of the name and so on" ? The only problem I have is that in the two baptisms we are looking at I am short a Jose and a Maria.

I've never seen that before but I am fairly sure it is "post unum" which is Latin for "after one". At first I thought it might be another expression for "póstumo" (posthumous) which is what they would write it the father had died during the pregancy. I do not think that is it since I could not find an óbido. There are more instances in the book with the same phrase (without the "digo"). I did find one that said "post terciam" (after 3rd). https://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-RIBEIRINHA-B-1856-1859/SMG-RG-RIBEIRINHA-B-1856-1859_item1/index.html?page=15 (right side). I wonder if there were 3 Marias for this couple before this one? Just a thought.
