Hello to All

If you have ancestors from Graciosa, you will want to check out these new marriage indexes for Luz, Guadalupe, and Santa Maria on Graciosa. This work was done and contributed by Tammy Medeiros-Jesso. Thank you, Tammy, for all your work and willingness to share it!

I have a Rose Cordoza (but I've also seen it spelled Cardoza) from Faial da Terra in my family tree. I don't know her parents or anything past her at this point. I think she was born about 1839.

Elizabeth

Cardoza is my husband’s surname. That branch of his family was from Terceira. If you go back a couple of generations to the Azores, you can see that the surname for a while was Esteves. His own grandfather used several surnames (Cardoza, Souza, Esteves, and various combinations) until he settled on Cardoza he immigrated to the U.S. The Cardoza/Cardoso part was from a maternal line. Unfortunately, and to our dismay, you can NOT follow a surname line by name only. The naming practices of the Azores are such that they don’t necessarily take their father’s surname for each generation. In fact, that is fairly uncommon. For a more in depth explanation of this to guide you in your research, please see this article:  http://www.worldgenweb.org/azrwgw/research-aids-m---z/naming-practices-of-the.html
