In a previous post I found out that Terri Santos had transcribed and made available an index of Sao Pedro in VF (which was helpful). I thought that instead of going through the records over and over I should create an index and hopefully the extra work up front would pay off after. Also once I’m done I will share with the group somehow and others can benefit. So I decided to do Matriz marriage from 1670-1705. Here’s why I’m writing this post, does anyone have any indexes they have done (of VF or any other areas besides the one on the Gen website)? Does anyone want to transcribe any records from VF? We can coordinate so we split the work and help each other out.
Thanks Fernando

Fernando,

As you know, there is a marriage index for Sao Miguel Arcanjo from 1800-1900. My suggestion would be to work backwards from that date (so starting in 1799 and working backwards). The further back you go, the more abbreviations are there and the more difficult it is to decipher. You may find more people willing to help out with the late 1700s too, as those earlier records are more difficult. I'd think you find more volunteers for a later time period. Anyways, it's just a thought. Since you are organizing it, you can do it however you chose :)

I wanted to chime in here and say that I am currently working on the Vila Franca Matriz marriage records for 1763-1799 (since there  already is an index of names starting 1800-1900)
I currently have Apr 1763- July 1777 marriages done and will definitely share with the group when its all done.
I think it would be fantastic if volunteers transcribe and share their index lists.  I still think its super important for people to confirm names, dates with the original documents on the CCA site in case something was interpreted wrong. The documents online may have alot more information that might be important that we are not including on the transcribed indexes like...places of birth, sidenotes of info...etc...

Ok great! Does anyone else want to contribute. For the marriages we have 1705-1743 and 1743-1763. Of course we have the baptism as well. I’m ok at deciphering records and I think it will take me a couple of weeks, so I does take some time. But I think it will be very helpful and as Terri mentioned that it’s just an index and people should check the actual record for verification and additional information. Are we able to get the index’s on the Gen website once completed? Thanks Fernando

Fernando,

Contact Kathy Cardoza directly. She's the webmaster of the Azores GenWeb and she can advise as to the format she'd need it in to make it work (Excel, etc). Kathy's email is kmacardoza at mac.com

Joe that’s great. Do you want to send me what you did and we can go from there. I was hoping other researchers had done an index or two. Please email me at fpimentel at hotmail.com
Thanks Fernando
