Hey all.  I've been pouring over Sao Jorge confession rolls, and I have a decent amount of information about my great grandmother.  However, it appears she was born either on another island, or town (In case I overlooked it).  She did not appear on documents in Sao Jorge(Urzelina) until 1927, when she had a son.  Whats the best and most efficient way to begin tracking down what island she was born?

Information: (some of this may be wrong)

Maria De Lordes Dias
Born June 5? 1906, location unknown.  Death unknown (Urzelina)
Parents: Josefina & Manuel Jorge Dias, birth and death dates unknown.  Unable to find in Urzelina confession rolls.
Children:  Helena, Laurentino, Fernando Jorge, Raul (alive), Ilda Lucilla (alive)
Siblings (the weakest information): Manuel, Jose, Americo, Artesia
Moved to Urzelina in 1926/1927

This is the biggest fish in my pond, so ANY information would be amazing.  I appreciate any response.

Any of the Baptismal records of her children should have her parish if they were born in the Acores. If she was married in the Acores that record will also have the parish where she was born.

Could these be her parents? Or do you already have their marriage? (Lefthand page)

I don't have any information on them other than their names.  What does that say? It's their names and the town but I'm having a hard time reading it.  (if you dont mind)

Brian,

How to pick at the records is on the Azores GenWeb here. Many of us learned to "read" by chipping away at our own records and now we can help others :)

To find your Maria, you will have to go freguesia (village) by freguesia, looking for a Maria, born June, 1905 to a Manuel Jorge Dias and a Josefina _____.
Choose the first council (county), Calheta, and go to each freguesia and search. If you can't find her, go to the council of Velas and then through every freguesia there.

Good luck,

A quick recap of some of the info since the names are not exact—

On 4 May 1903 Manuel Jorge married Josefa Victorina in the church of Sao Mateus in Urzelina. They were both baptized and lived in the parish, in  Ribeira de Nabo, part of Urzelina.

His father was pai incognito (unknown). His mother was Josefa Dias.

Her father was Manuel Victorino and her mother was Ana Joaquina.

Hope that helps.

Mary

PS I used the Sao Jorge Marriage index to find this

The birth record of her son may show the island , or town she was native too.

Hello Brian,

I think it likely Mary Bordi found the correct couple.  They had a daughter named Maria on 30 May 1904 that may be your Maria.  I've sent you an email about this also.

Its further complicated by the fact that she was never married and had 5 children out of wedlock - so the records are very very hard to find

Brian—

If she did not marry then the baptismal records may be there but hard to find—if she used different “versions” of her name on the records.

If you are just going by the confession rolls, I don’t know how complete they are or if everyone went to confession. ;)

She could be there. Don’t assume that because you haven’t found her by the name you know, she wasn’t there. Don’t give up!

Brian--
If that is the right couple and their daughter Maria, I found Maria Dias on the Urzelina Confessional Rois labeled 1929-1931-1933 on the SaoJorgeGenealogy.org site.  Look on page 35, entry 228.  It has Maria Dias and two children (Elena and Laurentino).  I believe Maria's father is on page 37 item 248 listed as Manuel Jorge, his wife Josefa Victorina (her name lined out and scrawled with "America") and 6 kids.  The  Jaime Soares de Noronha your have on your tree as Laurentino's father is on page 10 entry 39 with his other kids.  All of these are from the year 1929 part of this document.
