Hi --
I am starting the process of seeking Portuguese citizenship as the grandson of two Azorean immagrants to the U.S. in 1912.
One of the requirements appears to be getting birth certificates for each of them. My understanding is that because they were born in 1893 and 1894 (on São Miguel), that there are no civil birth certificates, only baptismal records (which I have located on line). Is this true?
Does anyone know if I now need to have birth certificates created from the baptismal records? If so, what is the process -- and the location -- for doing that?
I will be in São Miguel for a week in May to take the CIPLE test and visit, and hope to obtain whatever local records I need at that time.
Any advice or assistance that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Bill Tuttle
