Does anyone have any info regarding My Grandfather Abel Roman Avila Born in Terceira in 1895 ?

Hi,

I have been doing some Research to find out more about my grandfather that came over on the SS Romanica in 1910 from the Azores. My dad also named Abel Roman Avila born in 1919 never had a chance to meet him.

Abel or Roman as he was called passed away in 1919. My father Abel Avila passed away in 1977 when I was 15 yrs old. We never knew anything about that side of the family.

Hi Trisha,

You need to do more research in the U.S. to figure out which island they were from. Then the freguesia (like a village). Everything is organized on a town level there.

If you happen to find him coming to America on the American arrival records, some will tell you where he's from (depends on the time period). Then you'll be able to skip the step above.

Hi Trisha,

 

Did a quick check of the Terceira island passports and found your Grandfather.  See right side # 815.  He was 15 years old and is comes from the parish of Fontinha, Praia da Vitoria, Ilha Terceira.

 Yes, I found the ship manifest and see his name listed which also states the Island where he was born Terceira. I would love to find out about his family there siblings, parents....

You go to Tombo.pt. If you need it in English, click the British flag.

In the left navigation column, type Fontinhas (you need to use proper spelling). In the main window, a list will come up. Pick the Fontinhas that has to do with Praia da Vitoria and Terceira island. In the next window, Tombo will retrieve all available records from the Azores Government web site (Centro dos Conhecimento dos Azores or CCA for short).

If you don't read Portuguese, we have help. The records all follow a particular format. You only need to know how to pick out names and some key words. That guide to the records is on the Azores GenWeb here:
