Howdy folks,

Another release candidate of the firmware is ready for your capable hands.  We addressed all the feedback we got on the previous candidates and got the major issues worked out so its ready for hopefully the last spin in the field prior to official release.  A few notes:

* If you have tested other RC versions of 2.9.0, you will need to reset your configuration through the serial console or downgrade to 2.8.7 and then upgrade to this 2.9.0.

* RPM filtering has improvements.  Ensure you set the Max value field to be just above your red line.  This will ensure maximum filtering without clipping.

If you are headed to the track this weekend please do load this up and give us all the feedback you can.  We always appreciate it.  Thanks again.

Howdy beta testers,

Its been almost two weeks since this last RC was released.  Was wondering if any of you had a chance to test it in the field?  Any feedback?  Thanks.

Hi.

One of the issue I got with RC3 is that now scrolling first dashboard screen is almost always invokes channel settings. Reason for that - it's quite slow and treats slide action as a tap and since whole first dashboard screen filled with data - it registers a tap. I don't remember such behavior with 2.8.7, but maybe I've changed number of channels since last time. Same on Galaxy Tab S and Galaxy Note 4.

Other than that it works (compare to 2.8.7).

Max,

Thanks for trying it out. Scrolling behavior in the dashboard is not related to firmware changes. However, we have an update coming out in 1.4.5 that will improve the scroll vs select behavior in the app.

Brent,

It might be nice to have the ability to 'lock' the dashboards in some way so that they're not editable until you unlock them.  This would help with reducing risk of bring up the edit dialogs when trying to scroll in a moving vehicle.

Thanks. Are you referring to the channel selection or customization window? If so, you can dismiss these easily by tapping on the outside of the popup.

Menu for channel change or customization is not going away with tap outside on gauges screen - it just opens another one for another gauge. I agree it would be useful to have a full screen lock for dashboards in preferences.

Referring to the popup that provides buttons to remove, customize or select channel of a guage.  If I have the dashboard setup the way I want then the only thing I should be doing is scrolling through displays unless I touch the menu icon in the upper left corner.  Being able to lock out the accidental gauge click would be nice.  My other, nice to have, would be to be able to use the audio jack and media buttons to scroll with physical buttons on the steering wheel, doesn't look like Kivy has interfaces for intercepting those events though.

Sorry for hijacking the thread....

Hi Max,

I definitely confirmed that tapping outside of a channel selection window dismisses it without selecting another one. Can you confirm again, maybe with a video if it does? Would like to see why this happens with you and not me. Thanks!

Also worth noting is a feature that the gauge selection popup window will automatically dismiss after a period of time without user intervention, specifically designed for accidental activation while driving.  However, in recent testing I think the dismiss delay is a little too long. Please try it out and let me know your thoughts. The goal is to make it intuitive and responsive overall.

I'm using this feature all the time. Waiting when menu will go out. Nothing else helps. And in 99% of cases I didn't need that menu at all. Quite annoying. Check attachment.

As for responsive - that would be great. Currently it freezes and alows down significantly when logging is working. I barely can change a channel - scrolling is not working normal with that many channels

Got it. I see it's on the initial pop up. Does it happen with the channel selector or alert customization?

No those are modal and click away works for them, but they activated during scrolling if scrolling is not smooth.

Also this menu often pops up if I need to change a screen and accidentally press lower line. Or if I'm trying to swipe left-right dashboards expecting that swipe works (it's not). Time waste on that menu popup is incredibly high tbh. Especially if you're driving - it might take 90% of time.

Great feedback, thank you. We can definitely improve that experience.

On the scrolling / selecting, 1.4.5 should provide some improvement in that area.

Did a little more looking through Kivy, the app code on github and have an ask...

Can you add support for allowing left/right arrow keys to scroll through the dashboard pages, seems like an easy add.  This would theoretically allow me to use a keyboard bluetooth module (e.g. https://www.adafruit.com/products/1535) to have hardwired buttons on the steering wheel send the left/right keys so it'll be easy to scroll through pages with racing gloves on.  The editable vs. non-editable thing would still be nice, especially if you could enable/disable certain dashboard screens so they're not visible when in non-editable mode.

As a supplemental display the app is nice as is, if it becomes your primary/only source of data in the car besides a tach and lights I'm concerned that having more data or interactions than absolutely necessary will be an annoyance/distraction.

-Gil

P.S.  If this is low on your priority list then I'm willing to submit a PR, just have to fit it in with my day job and prepping my car.

Keyboard switching of screens is a great idea, will add that issue.  I'll grab one of those bluetooth adapters as well, look cool. Thanks!

Justin,

Amazon's app store does not support the concept of betas, but we've put the .apk on dropbox as an alternative way to install the beta:
