Hello group, thanks to allowing me to join!

After spending a few days searching for datasets, I finally found everything I could possible need here (thank you Bill) ...but a few hours later I'm not sure if it's possible to get this data into QGIS.

I've tried MapWindow (w/KML2Shapefile), GPSBabel, GlobalMapper and some online tools; I realise the file is essentially empty and contains a link but I can't seem to 'explore' that link any further.

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Explore the file with a text editor, all of the information in there is explicable so ultimately you can see and figure exactly what is there. Of it's kmz you can just unzip it first, though that may need a bit of trickery.

Cheers, Mike

Thanks for taking the time to reply Mike. This KML is all links though so I might need to find an alternative...

<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?>

xmlns:gx="http://www.google.com/kml/ext/2.2">

<href>http://globe.six.nsw.gov.au/nswglobe/</href>

</gx:GoogleMapsEngineLink>
</kml>

Hi Carl,

sorry about this, I haven't used the Globe link inside of QGIS. I was simply referring to the fact that the data was online. I find that it is an important dataset, but as far as I know it can only be viewed in Google Earth.

hope that helps

The fact that it was available in GE helped convince me to carry on Bill, thanks again for the resource.

I've had some success with an experimental plugin for QGIS, it seems able to iterate though "sub-layers" of the sixmaps REST service (http://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/arcgis/rest/services/sixmaps).

This works on Windows 8.1 + QGIS 2.6.1 (both 32/64 bit). The plugin is provided by Geometalab (https://github.com/geometalab/ArcGISConnector-QGIS-Plugin/tree/master/_release) and beneficial for those who don't know python / command line utils.
