Severe thunderstorms moving towards the ACT

HI everyone,

The Canberra Radar shows intense thunderstorms to our southwest moving northeast towards the southern suburbs. There is a risk of heavy rain, damaging wind gusts and hail on some of the storm cells . Watch for BOM warning in the next hour or so and take precautions.

Hi all,

The predicted severe thunderstorms eventuated as I was driving to Weston to pick up Mum Esther at then Islamic School in Weston. As I was driving along Athlon Drive toward Phillip the heavens opened with loads of small to medium size hailstones. I had to pull off the road outside under the trees alongside the Marist College Ovals as the stones were getting rather large and I feared a cracked windscreen. By the time I reached Weston the storm had cleared to the north but there was a carpet of hailstones like a snowfall around Weston and heaps of leave stripped from trees littering the roads. We only had 2.8 mm here at Gilmore North but flooded roads and lying water shows much heavier rain in the Woden area and Weston.

Be alert as we are not out of the woods yet.

Hi Gavin,

The storm affecting areas further north east - Bungendore to Tarago - appears to be a supercell, with rotation evident on radar and a standout updraught evident on satellite infrared.
