Remarkable long-duration heatwave unfolding

Exceptional record-challenging heat is set to spread across a big portion of mainland southeastern and southern Australia during the coming days.

Most of the coastal capital cities look to escape the worst of it, albeit still getting above-average temps, however Adelaide and Melbourne are currently forecast to reach 45C and 43C on Tuesday and Monday respectively.

There's even the possibility of a few spots getting close to, or exceeding 50 degrees, though whether or not this will occur at one of the weather stations and be recorded, is unknown.

50C isn't unprecedented in Oz and the sparseness of weather stations in remote areas also has to be considered, but it's also far from common at the existing weather stations.

And it's not just the max and min temps that look impressive with this heatwave - it's also the duration of the extreme heat, with a large area experiencing day after day of it for up to a whole week.

It's also set to create nasty fire dangers in some areas.

This map shows the NAEFS system's forecast for how many degrees above or below average that temps averaged across the next 7 days are expected to be.

Note that the strongest red shade represents 6C or more above average (it isn't just capped to a max of 6C above average). Therefore, it's likely that many places in that zone will be a lot more than 6C above average:

Hi Ken.

 

Isn't it appropriate that school is going back on Wednesday here in Victoria and the old joke has always been, That it is always hot when school goes back.

 

Wednesday on the OCF forecast is currently showing 45.8 degrees for that day. That will try out my new school bus and its air con.

My wife goes back to school after Australia Day. Temperatures predicted to reach 43 degrees in Canberra, just short of the record. No aircon either!

Too hot to get anything done. My bus depot has a little portable office with an air con so I will have to do paperwork or something during the day, and all week

Been amongst it in SA now for several days…

Been quite a bit of hype about eastern states temps, but missing the fact we might crack a 50C here today plus numerous records, in the eastern half of the state tomorrow, and then again on Thursday in the northern parts of the state. (at least Ken mentioned SA!)
Ceduna & Cummins already broken all time records and keep an eye on Ceduna current max of 49.1C…..
