What NSW regional roads would you like to see become state roads?

Here are three regional roads that I will like to see become state roads in the future

M.R. 256: The reason why M.R. 256 should become a state road is that it is a really important road for the communities and villages between Oberon and Goulburn. My guess why it's a regional road and not a state road is because nearby M.R. 54 is a state road.

Edith Road (the regional part of M.R. 253): The reason why Edith Road should become a state road is that it is a big gap in the state road network and the other roads that form M.R. 253, O'Connell and Jenolan Caves roads, are already state roads. My guess why Edith Road is a regional road is because there's already a state road nearby that serves a similar purpose, M.R. 558 (Duckmaloi Road).

Bylong Valley Way (M.R. 208 and M.R. 215): It is the only trafficable road crossing of the Blue Mountains after the Great Western Highway and Bells Line of Road. I can't think of an explanation for why it's a regional road and not a state road.

Bylong Valley Way couldn’t become a state route in its current… state. It would however make for a much faster route between Bathurst and Muswellbrook as a fully upgraded B route, completely bypassing the blue mountains

There's a good map on the TfNSW site now, showing the road classifications:

One obvious gap on there is Alpine Way, from the edge of Kosciusko NP through Khancoban to join the Murray Valley Hwy at Corryong.

A few others that should be considered in a strategic network sense:
  • Braidwood to Nowra
  • Oberon bypass (Albion St) - bizarre that this is only a Regional Road and the main street is still a State Road
  • Wagga Wagga - Lockhart - Urana - Jerilderie - Deniliquin
  • Bucketts Way (Raymond Terrace to Gloucester) + Thunderbolts Way (Gloucester to Inverell)
Edith Rd is not relevant as a state road as the link serving Oberon is via Duckmaloi Road. Jenolan Caves Road is only a state road as it serves Jenolan Caves...

MR256 and MR208/MR215 are borderline. I can see the potential strategic function, but Bylong Valley Way is not a high standard road and it doesn't have any real regional freight role.

I already knew about that map by the way. The reason why Albion Street is a regional road is because it was built by Oberon Council.

By the way, there's one little quirk on that map, main road 255 is missing! It's supposed to follow Hazelgrove and Diamond Swamp roads. It is on the Schedule of Classified Roads, but not on the map. It's either that it was forgotten on the map, or it was abolished and they forgot to remove it from the schedule.

So was the Orange Northern Distributor but as of 2023 it is now the Mitchell Highway.

Good spotting re MR255. I thought that had been deproclaimed years ago tbh, but you are correct it is still on the list.

It was talked about and recommended for years to make the Northern Distributor Road a state road and incorporate it into the Mitchell Highway. I have heard nothing about plans to make Albion Street a state road.

I thought I bring this up. Kiama Council wants to make Jamberoo Mountain Road a state road and the only progress on that I know is that they wrote to the NSW Government about making JMR a state road on one of their updates about the landslides that happened on that road. (BTW if you didn't know already, it reopened recently) Here's a link to the update I'm talking about: https://www.kiama.nsw.gov.au/Council/News/Jamberoo-Mountain-Road-update-%E2%80%93-9-November-2022

I just found this update from when the road reopened and it said that the Kiama Council is discussing whether or not JMR should stay as a regional road or should it become a state road. Here's the update: https://www.kiama.nsw.gov.au/Council/News/Jamberoo-Road-reopens
