During Astropy Coordination Meeting 2025, an idea was floated to enable GitHub Discussions as yet another forum where Astropy community can help each other out. Currently ones include but not limited to Discourse, Facebook, and #community-help channel on Astropy Slack.

- Should we?
- What are the pros and cons?
- Do we have the resources to moderate?
- Will people actually use it?
- Org level or repo level?

None of numpy, scipy, matplotlib or pandas GH repos appear to have GitHub Discussions enabled. I was hoping that some other big project would be able to provide some experience or guidance, but it may be telling that none of them use it.

I like the concept, but I am somewhat skeptical that this new channel will gain much traction. The point made during the coordination meeting seems important to me -- people are turning to AI to get help and there will be reduced engagement in human based forums (for better or worse).

My 2c.
