We had trouble getting Artsmesh to link two computers, located at two different places in the UK. This might have been caused by the automatic switching of IP addresses, or some vagaries of the internet providers that we're using. Anyway, we found a great solution - LogMein by Hamachi. https://www.vpn.net/  This essentially created new temporary IP addresses for our computers, an linked them together, essentially doing the meshing bit of Artsmesh. We were then able to use Jack and Artsmesh to do the audio routing, and it worked perfectly. So - highly recommended - and it is free if you're connecting fewer than 5 computers

hi adrian,
sounds good. we are experimenting with adding a pan-artsmesh vpn to our toolkit.
and also the choice of running your own p2p open-vpn on your own computer, if you do have a public IP address.

Do you need to bother with opening ports 4464 then if you have that vpn tunnel running between each other?

could you run the ping and traceroute tabs in the ‘network tools’ panel with both your vpn on and off?
It would be interesting to see if there’s a difference in routes/latency.

remember to start the vpn first before artsmesh boots, so that you don’t have to switch artsmesh ‘private ipv4’ address
from your real network to the virtual network - as then you'll need to restart artsmesh.

RE: your network problem: One major reason that we’re having is that the jacktrip needs to have the public IP address to route to.
Some routers return the public IP to artsmesh and some don’t. we’re trouble shooting this.
See below in the picture, my own router (Cox cable). doesn’t return mine. so I have only local IP to offer peers for jacktrip use.
You can find this info in groups panel, live tab. hover over user and look at the ‘i’ information icon.

The solution is to paste your public address (go to some 'whats my ip’ site from google),
into the ETHADDRESS field of your USER tab, PROFILE panel.

then a client will be able to cut and paste that address and connect to your jacktrip server.
So in the jacktrip popup window, the ROLE is CLIENT, and CONNECT to IP Address.
type in the Peer name and IP address.

if you have someone in your group who does have the public IP returned to artsmesh,
definitely use that node in SERVER role. open ports 4464 and up.

thanks for posting that,
Ken

Hi Ken
Thanks for that.

//

Do you need to bother with opening ports 4464 then if you have that vpn tunnel running between each other?

//

No, we didn’t need to do that, it got around the need to do it

//

could you run the ping and traceroute tabs in the ‘network tools’ panel with both your vpn on and off?

//

Yes, the routes are different. We simply couldn’t connect just using Artsmesh, the computers couldn’t find each other; when we ran the traceroute from either end it just got lost and never made the connection. Whereas with logmein the connection was immediate

//

RE: your network problem: One major reason that we’re having is that the jacktrip needs to have the public IP address to route to.

//
Yes, we encountered this problem. I think this was compounded by the switching IPs, which meant that the IPV6 IP in my case was not publicly visible
//

The solution is to paste your public address (go to some 'whats my ip’ site from google),
into the ETHADDRESS field of your USER tab, PROFILE panel.

//
Yes, we tried that, but it didnt fix the problem unfortunately

Thanks again for your help. We are delighted to get Artsmesh working and are looking forward to using it for some upcoming sessions.

All the best - Adrian
PS As a very minor suggestion, if you are looking to improve it fiurther - it would be helpful if the ports on the wheel were numbered!
