Hello Archivematica community,

I am posting here to let you know that we have come to the conclusion that Artefactual Systems can no longer maintain the Appraisal tab and its related functionality in Archivematica. Our current intention is to remove it in version 1.19 of Archivematica, to be released in the coming months.

The primary reason for this removal is security concerns with the technology that the Appraisal tab uses, coupled with our understanding that many institutions find the Appraisal tab to be of limited utility in their workflows.

We have described the context of the problem and the options currently under consideration in an Architectural Decision Record as well as in an Archivematica issue. There is a question of whether it makes sense to continue to support transfer backlogs without the Appraisal tab and we are considering our options there- your feedback on the matter is welcome either as a comment on this post or a comment on the Archivematica issue linked above.

We know that the removal of a feature or functionality that is used in your environment can pose difficulty and we want to convey that we did not take this decision lightly. However, by reducing the scope of Archivematica’s maintenance burden we can focus on future development that has higher impact for Archivematica’s current and future users.

Best,

Question, could the ArchivesSpace integration be able to live elsewhere?

In the Appraisal Tab version of the integration, no, we do not have plans to move it elsewhere. However you will still be able to use the DIP upload to ArchivesSpace either through the matching interface or the csv route (https://archivematica.org/en/docs/archivematica-1.18/user-manual/access/access/#upload-as). I will note though that you may have compatibility issues depending on the version of ArchivesSpace you are using (https://github.com/archivematica/Issues/issues/1739)

If other ArchivesSpace users have workflows that have been working for them perhaps they can chime in.

Hi there I am just curious, what plugin are you referring to? is there a page where there is documentation on it?  I am working with my dev team and trying to wrap our heads about this change associated with a project that we are working on for this.

Ah ok, so the end point is the tree endpoint that was in ASpace until 3.2, myself and Parneeth have been chipping away and have created middle ware to restore this functionality into Archivematica.  Meaning that it is able to translate the request from Amatica to go to ASpace and still show the results even when the endpoint no longer exist.  Could we do something to combine these efforts into something so that we can keep this migration alive in a different state?

Hi Sarah,

Here, in this issue  -  https://github.com/archivematica/Issues/issues/1739,  it has been stated about ASpace plug-in for the tree endpoint. Can you please share more information about how to reinstate that??

Hi Patrick,

I saw your questions: Question, could the ArchivesSpace integration be able to live elsewhere?

While I can't answer this question, I think this would be a good discussion for one of our community development meetings where you could discuss potential ideas with our Archivematica maintainers. Our next meeting is the 26th of February at 8.30am Pacific time. Further details and joining information can be found here: https://github.com/archivematica/Issues/wiki/Community-Development-Meetings. If you can't make this month, we run them every fourth Thursday at 8.30am Pacific time.

Hope to see you there!

Best wishes,

Yes Sarah M has read my mind- this would be a great discussion to have in the context of local development and contributions. I'm not sure we will have an easy suggestion but that might be the best venue to talk it through.

Cheers,

Sarah
