Dear all,

My name is Fendi and I'm currently working with The Heritage of Malaysia Trust. Currently, I've been reading up about this cool Arches system and I'd really like to use it. But I really don't know how to start downloading it, even though I've read the manual. I'm pretty bad at these. So anybody, can help?

Greetings Fendi

Welcome to the Arches community, and great to know of your interest in using Arches in Malaysia! Arches has been designed as an enterprise-level system (for use at organizational or project scales), and not as a desktop application. Perhaps if you have access to others who have experience with installing and implementing information systems, it may be worthwhile to speak with them about installation.

Best wishes,

David Myers

Hi David,
at the risk of sounding stupid, can I ask what you mean by enterprise-level system? does that mean all the PCs in my organisation need to be connected to some kind of server? If its not the case, won't it be possible to install arches?

I want to try using Arches for some of the tangible immovable cultural heritage of Mauritius. In the first phase, this will be a personal project. Once I have started to better understand how it works, I would be presenting it to my organisation and proposing to implement it on a larger scale: within the organisation and within a working group that's spread across many organisations. Do you think that's possible?

regards,

Maurina

Hi Maurina, nice to hear that you are trying out Arches.  Arches is considered an enterprise-level system because, as you guessed, it is not designed to reside on your laptop or desktop computer, but instead on a remote server.  However, all the PCs in your organization would be able to access Arches directly through the internet, as would any other computers, because to its users (and you), Arches functions just like a website.

In practice, people install Arches in a variety of ways, but these are the most common:
  1. On a cloud hosting service, like Amazon Web Services or Digital Ocean
  2. On locally maintained servers
    • An example of this would be a university system that maintains their own webservers and allows its departments to use them for academic project
  3. On a laptop or desktop computer
    • This is not the way to create a production-ready installation of Arches, but it is a good way to test it out and make general customizations
Creating an installation of Arches can be a pretty involved process, so if you haven't already I'd recommend that you read the Implementation Considerations document that you can find here on the forum.  Starting small with your own project is a good idea.

Altogether, your plan sounds like a very good one, and the fact that Arches runs on a remote server will serve your needs very well, because people all across the organization will be able to access it from anywhere.

I hope that answers your questions, but always feel free to ask more...

Dear all,

My name is Gabriela and I work in Condephaat, the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Government of São Paulo, Brazil. I have been following Arches developments with great interest and I would like to test its suitability to the inventory needs of our organization, in regards to a possible future IT contract that would allow us to have the proper technical assistance to customize and manage a local version of Arches. But before that, and in order to make this possible, I need to test it and demonstrate results of testing.

I share with the previous posts in this topic and the more recent  https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/archesproject/OZFLRgrkO_M/5uy9xptfJQAJ  the problem of not having enough technical expertise to follow the installation and customization instructions alone – although I have tried and made through until a certain point – and our Department does not currently have IT personnel to help.

Understanding that it is not possible to provide an “easy installation” mode, I would like to hear your thoughts on some possible ways to carry on the tests.

1.Use the Demo version

a. am trying to create heritage resources on the Demo, but what I insert is not saved and is kept on pending review mode (This resource has provisional edits (not displayed in this report) that are pending review). Is this correct? I have already received the email saying “Reference Data Manager access granted”.

b. Is there any form to save locally a few bits of information entered in the demo version (apart from print screens) since it will be overwritten on a regular basis?

c.When the edition of controled vocabularies is enabled, is it possible to create new data categories or just modificate volcabularies of the existing data fields?

2. Proceed with installation trial

a. What would be main abilities to learn in order to be able to perform a basic local installation of Arches? Python? What else?

b. Has anyone yet registered in a more thorough way the step-by-step process of installation on Windows? (eg. “open your command prompt, type xxwiwyi”...) If so, it could help people like me to overcome some interpretation doubts on the documentation already available.

I thank you all in advance,

Hello Gabriela,

Thank you for introducing yourself and sharing some background on your technical needs and interest in Arches.  Regarding the current Arches demo site, we are in the process of upgrading it to v5.  I don't have the exact date of when it will go live, but we will definitely announce it here once it's available.  In the meantime, as you are currently working on an earlier demo version, I can ask my colleagues to shed some light on your questions.

To follow up on your installation question, have you seen the updated Implementation Considerations document?  This resource describes requirements and recommended technical skills to install, configure and customize Arches.  As for a step-by-step Windows guide, I can direct you to a a coupe of forums posts with helpful information. If you would like to ask follow up questions there, I'm confident you will get feedback from the group.

I hope this information is helpful for now.  We will keep you posted on the upgraded Arches demo site and hope to announce it soon.

Best,

Alina
