Hello,

This is my first post to the Arches Forum, so to introduce myself.  I'm Collections Information Manager for Manx National Heritage and we have just completed the install of Arches v.5 for the Isle of Man Historic Environment Record.  The install was done by Knowledge Integration who moved a copy of our data into 1 Resource Model.

I've looked at the Arches Guide, watched the Webinars and started to create the MIDAS-based Resource Models we have chosen to use - see attached screenshot.  Early days.  I wonder however if anyone can give me some basic pointers (and reassurance) on the following questions I have, which I'm thinking are fairly basic queries for a beginner with Arches such as myself:

Do these MIDAS-based Resource Models make sense within Arches?  Is anyone else using MIDAS in this way?

How do I use and create Branches to link between the Resource Models?
Knowledge Integration took our HER data and put it in the Monument Resource Model and created a Graph - see attached screenshot.  Site Dating node (for example) needs to 'change' to my newly created Date and Period Resource Model; see attached screenshot.  How do I do this (if indeed I'm interpreting this right)?

Is there a guide on how to apply CIDOC-CRM to MIDAS?  (Not even sure if that is a valid question).

Thanks for any beginner's guidance on the above, we're excited here to be using Arches and are working to make it 'live' to the public in March 2021.

Cheers,  Jude.

Hi Jude! Nice to hear from you and welcome to the Forum! These are great questions, and I trust that someone from the community will get back to you shortly.

So you know, it's Labor Weekend in the US and several have taken the week off, so there may be a delay in responses from here...although questions regarding MIDAS, in particular, are likely better understood on your side of the pond.

In any event, I'll keep an eye on this exchange to ensure that someone gets back to you before too long.

Best for now and stay safe!
Alison

Hi Jude,

We at HE have been working at creating resource models, some of which is based on MIDAS. My colleague Phil Carlisle will be happy to discuss this with you at some point soon, as this is what he's been focused on (as well as MIDAS itself in the past).

Best wishes,
Chris Dolby

Thanks Alison and Chris for responding so soon, it's great to know that advice is at hand as we take our first baby-steps with configuring Arches.

At the moment it's largely the mechanics of how I use branches to link resource models - I just can't seem to figure that bit, though I imagine it's an easy thing to do - Alison, I'll wait to hear from the team your end on this once the holidays are over.

Chris, that's really good to hear that HE is basing some of its resource models on MIDAS - how best might I discuss this with Phil (who I've met briefly)?  I wonder whether Phil and I could schedule a very quick Zoom call this week where I can share my Arches Designer screen and he could give me some pointers?  The drive here is to start editing our records in Arches in late Sep, so as you can tell, I'm keen to get us at least able to populate some of the MIDAS Information Groups as resource models on Arches, and build from there.  Baby-steps as I say...

Thanks again both,

Jude.

Hi Jude,

Glad to hear you’re moving on to Arches v.5.

Right.

To answer your first question. Yes they make sense. When we built the first heritage inventory package (HIP) for Arches we based each model on one of the MIDAS themes. We’ve slimmed down the number of models since as you can type many of the activity models (investigative activity, management activity etc) but the resource models are MIDAS compliant. We have separated Assets into Heritage Assets (building and structures), Heritage Areas (large sites, conservation areas etc.) and Artefacts (self-explanatory). We’ve also developed a full period model similar to yours. In the olden days we made do with a dropdown and from and to dates, but in this fancy, future-proofing world we live in, a semantically-rich, spatio-temporal representation of time seems more useful and appropriate. I’m happy to share.

Okay so linking is relatively easy. Each node that needs to reference another model (eg. a Monument record referencing a period record) needs to have the data type ‘resource instance’ or ‘resource instance list’.

If you are only referencing 1 model then choose resource instance and then select the model you want to link to. The top branch in the model will be the one you see so for Period make sure the Name is at the top in the Cards display.

You can also link to 2 models so for example if you wanted to link people and organizations to a monument using a single ‘Associated Actors’ branch you can do this by selecting ‘resource instance list’ as the datatype and then add each model.

Finally there isn’t a guide to mapping MIDAS to the CRM. However, I do have a spreadsheet I made many, many moons ago which is VERY out of date (as the CRM has been revised) and includes classes and properties which have since been deprecated but I can share those with you.

I’m happy to talk through this on Zoom. I could probably do tomorrow but I’m off Thursday and Friday of this week so maybe next week would be better?

Phil

Hey Phil,

You've proper made my day.  Seriously.  Thank-you.

Having installed Arches v.5 (working with Knowledge Integration and our local host IT provider) the 'proper work' now starts with me and the team here in getting Arches fully ready to manage and give access to the Isle of Man HER.  Reading your reply has given me the confidence I need to crack on with getting the data structure in place before the editing starts.

I will try linking a couple of resource models tomorrow - fortunately we have a test Arches site which I can learn on.

Next week would be great for a very quick Zoom call - any day and time suits me, just let me know and I'll email you a Zoom meeting (40 mins maximum!); I have your email address.
I have a practical example I'd like to run through (as I reckon once I understand that, well, 'Arches is my oyster'.)  Example is:

How do I create and link Investigative Activity records (e.g. excavations at a site) to a Monument record?

The MIDAS-CRM mapping doc would be useful if only to get me engaged with the mapping process and creating an updated version - thanks.

My email: jude....@mnh.im

Thanks again Phil, so helpful,

Jude.

Hi Jude,

I just wanted to let you know that there is currently an effort to provide more guidance documentation on creating Resource Models for Arches, and we are hoping to announce the first draft of this documentation very soon. Hopefully, along with the guidance you receive from Phil, this documentation will help you to better understand the basics of constructing Arches Resource Models and how to apply them to your project.

All the best,
Annabel

Hey Annabel - thanks, that's great news.  Phil gave me some excellent guidance yesterday and I'm now in full-swing creating and linking Resource Models.  I have a follow-up question about how to use the RDM to create a simple dropdown but I'll raise this in a separate conversation.

Thanks again, it's great to be really getting to work on Arches,

Jude.
