Replication between multiple machines on Community Edition

Is it possible to do data replications between multiple machines using the Community Edition?

The manual mentions Synchronous and asynchronous replication. If I got that right, Asynchronous replication is available only in Enterprise version, but what does the Synchronous replication offer? Can it replicate to another machine or is it just a cluster on a single physical machine?
