Selecting IO tab immediate "stops" Avare (i.e. Android app crash)

I'm running Avare version 10.1.5 on a Pixel 4a which, itself is running Android version 12 with the latest update.

I don't know when this problem occurs as I'm usually running Avare and a different device.  I've only started trying to run without the External I/O app yesterday and figured it out on my old Nexus tablet but on my phone, which I generally only use as a backup and haven't tried in quite a long time... Wont run the required IO (either the old external I/O app or the IO tab in Avare).

I've tried removing the External I/O app, doing the latest android update, stopping Avare and flushing all of it's memory etc.

The symptoms are that I open the app, it appears to be fine, I select the IO tab and the app closes.  I open the app again, and now I'll get a notification from Avare saying "touch to open settings".  I select the IO tab and this time, in addition, in addition to Avare closing, I get an Android pop-up saying "Avare keeps stopping.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Steve.

Steve,

First the external I/O app is no longer supported, running the external IO application may cause unpredictable results with Avare so I'd suggest you remove it before going further as it is possible it is running in the background.

That said I am successfully running Avare on a Samsung Galaxy S10 which is the only device I have running Android 12 and I have no problem accessing the IO tab and receiving data.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the note.  Sorry I wasn't more clear in my post.  External I/O is *not* installed on my phone.  It used to be but after various android updates, android informed me that it was no longer welcome and I removed it.  All of my interactions with the IO tab occurred *after* the External IO module had been removed.  Apparently there is something else that needs to be changed (Beyond the clearing of all the Avare data, rebooting my phone, etc that I have already tried numerous times.)

Glad to hear everything works for you.

If anyone has any ideas on what to try so that I can debug my installation, I'm all ears...

Steve.

The latest app does not require reporting the crashes. They get reported automatically. 8 users have experienced 35 instances of stop bugs. None of these bugs points to IO activity. Cannot do much about it but will try to see if fixing an unrelated stop will help in the next release.

Regarding the reporting of stop bugs...  Am I correct in interpreting what you said to mean that my stops have likely been reported and they they don't show up as IO activity per se but nonetheless, they are being looked at as part of the 35 instances received?  If so - that's pretty cool!

Regardless, Unless I hear suggestions to the contrary (presumably to improve the understanding of what's wrong rather than just try to fix it...) I think my next step is to actually delete the app, reboot the phone, reinstall the app and, with any luck, whatever weird state that is causing my seemingly unique issue will have been reset.

Fingers crossed...

Steve.

Correction!  External I/O *was* still installed.  Apparently I previously only succeeded in removing it from my launch screens <sigh>.  I have not yet confirmed my problems are over, but it is my expectation that they are.

Sorry for the noise on the forum...  I should have caught my mistake before I even posted.

Dang, still doesn't work (confirmed External I/O is really gone, also deleted Avare, rebooted, reinstalled Avare, still no joy... and I was so optimistic too...  And I think I did just send a bug report.  Apparently I had to do some approval before it would be sent which I have now done...

So, I'm still looking for ideas.

> So, I'm still looking for ideas.

If I'm understanding correctly, based on Avare auto-crash reporting a
very small number of users have encountered this. If so, might a
possible cause be conflict with other apps? Perhaps it would be helpful
for the Dev Team to find and fix the issue if everyone who has this
problem lists all installed apps and settings.

You might also try to determine exactly what apps are open when the
crash happens. Many apps auto-launch during Android startup and run
invisibly in the background. My impression is that many (most? all?) of
them can be listed this way in Android (not Avare) while Avare is running:
Settings -> Apps (aka Applications) -> Show System Apps (all)
The list of apps will then include many with the Android app icon
including some that start with the name "com." such as com.android...
and com.google...

It's possible this information along with detailed device info (see
Settings -> About...) could narrow down which devices and apps might be
involved.

Hi,

I'm not sure if APP sends my crash/stop reports, but I do confirm the issue: the IO tab is non-operative and crashes the APP immediately.
I wanted to configure it, but I can't even open it.
Pixel5, latest updates. Tried flash, reinstall, reboot, everything but no progress.

Regards,
George.

Hi
Thanks for reporting.
Will check online if the crash is reported. Problems like these could be fixed sometimes by updating the phone OS.
What version of OS do you use?

I'm running Avare on a Pixel 5a, Android 12, July update.  IO tab works fine on my phone as well as my Nexus 7 (2013) running Android 6.0.1 .

Hi,
It's Android 12 with the latest security updates installed. However, I experience it through last year at least.

Correction: it's Android 13 now. All the symptoms are the same. The app seems working OK except the IO tab.

Try unpairing all BT devices from Android BT menu. Maybe that will tell something.

OK, that shed some light on it. I've made all the BT devices forgotten on my Pixel 5, so now the IO tab is available with the 'Bluetooth' connection option selected by default.
When I switched it to MSFS, I can configure it to use WiFi on the specified port and enable it to listen. It works as expected now. I can use MSFS data as a GPS source for the Avare app.
I've paired my AirPods back and tried to play with the IO tab and found no issues as of now. I'll keep trying to crash it again just to make sure the app is working good (for my IRL flights) and provide you more details if any.

Thank you for the hint!

Regards,
George.

UPD: I do not see issues as of now even though I have some of my devices back paired to my Pixel 5.
I'll keep testing it for you.
