Stratux traffic in AvareX

BLUF: How do you get AvareX to “see” the traffic Stratux is picking up.

I’ve tried it on two Apple iPads and my android phone and the traffic doesn’t show up in AvareX. From reading through threads, I thought that AvareX basically “automatically” found the information Stratux was feeding to it when you are connected to the Stratux. 

FWIW - Avare on my Android phone has listen on 4000 checked and shows the traffic I don’t see on AvareX. 

Help the dummy please? 🤷‍♂️

It should start showing traffic automatically, however you need to make sure that the traffic layer is turned on.  The feature icons along the bottom, you want the right most one (kinda looks like two boards), choose that one and you will get a menu pop up where you can select which layers you want.  I personally choose Nav, Circles, Chart, Weather, TRF, & Traffic.  If I am flying and there is weather I'll also enable NOAA Loop and turn everything else off.

Are you testing while on the ground?

Keep in mind that AvareX is limiting the traffic view to +/-3000 ft and 10nm of your current position.

From that wording I guess you're seeing *some* traffic, but some *is*
showing. If so, AvareX traffic is probably working correctly, while also
(as pointed out by others) *differently* than in Avare. One other
consideration which you're probably aware of, but worth mentioning here
in case it helps others, is that ADSB *Out* is required to see all
available traffic.

I like how AvareX automatically does so many things, and lets newbies
get going without delving into lots of settings. I aIso like how much it
changes as new features and options are added.

I like Avare's plentiful Settings, such as a choice of displaying pretty
much all available traffic in the area. I've used that at busy airports
to choose arrival and departure requests. Other times I set it closer to
reduce clutter and distraction, such as aloft near an active airport.

Most of all, I like having the choice of two excellent free apps and
more platforms that they can run on (even though I don't use anything
but Android so far).

I have it wired together in pieces on my work bench.  I live in an area where you cannot pick up any ADS towers on the ground and, during the entire time testing, I only saw one airliner on the stratux.  I am working on packaging it all together and trying it in the air.  I have a 7" 800*480 screen that is not great, but, should work as proof of concept.

I just broke my 3d printer, so my Stratux / Avarex is on the back burner until parts arrive.  If I get a chance when the weather is nice I will set it up outside and hope somebody flies over.  If nothing else, I can test that Avarex is picking up the GPS data.

Today I ran X on raspberry pi 4 with 2 GB memory and profiled it. Runs fast on sub window, but slows down and still useful at 4k full window and weather turned on.

It took me awhile, but I finally tested everything, and it did not go well.  First, I tried installing and NVME SSD and set the PCI speed to 3.  I did not know then that also doubled the USB speeds and fried my new SDRs.  Once I got past that, I had a desktop, Stratux, and AvareX all working fine except I never found a way to route the UDP packets from the AP0 interface to AvareX.  With the AP+client setting, I could access the internet and the Stratux page.  This made updates very easy, but AvareX still had no GPS, AHRS, or ADS-B data.  We need either a Stratux expert to add a mode to the networking or is there a way for AvareX to read in the data from the hardware without Stratux.  I need to take a break from this until inspiration strikes.

I'm not sure, but from reading back, you are trying to run Stratux and AvareX at the same time on the same Pi?

From the stratux docs:

Stratux uses GDL90 protocol over port 4000 UDP. All messages are sent as **unicast** messages. When a device is connected to the stratux Wi-Fi network and a DHCP lease is issued to the device, the IP of the DHCP lease is added to the list of clients receiving GDL90 messages.

The problem here is that there is no DHCP lease in that case. The leases are read from the default dnsmasq file '/var/lib/misc/dnsmasq.leases'

Assuming no dockers running, it probably wouldnt be too hard to make some small mods to the code to trick stratux into using a specific ip address to send messages to, and create some sort of a sub-interface with that IP.

I think you can configure stratux with a (manual) list of IP addresses for unicast GDL90 dissemination.  Under Settings via 192.168.10.1.

Yup, you are correct.  I had seen that field on the settings page but didnt need it so never bothered to see what it did.

I was able to send updates over my home LAN to my AvareX tablet by putting the tablets IP in that field.  Updates started about 5 seconds later.

Interestingly, I found that Stratux also must use the local arp table and sends data to every device in there.  I see connections to port 4000 on my router, local computer, basically every device the raspberry pi knew about was getting the datagrams.

One OTHER method, I left my tablet connected to my home LAN and verified it was not receivinig data (GPS SRC was 'Internal').  After a minute or two, I used the browser to connect to the Stratux management page (at its LAN address, not the 192.168.10.1) and within 5 seconds, the GPS SRC switched to 'External' and I was receiving traffic info.  However, this method might not be reliable if things age out of the arp table.

NOW the question is how does AvareX determine which interface to bind to.  On a typical endpoint, I would expect to see only one internface (ie, wlan0 on linux) and the loopback   The Stratux in AP+Client mode has 4 (ap0, eth0, lo, wlan0).  I was able to set the static IP in my settings page to the local raspberry pi IP address and the Stratux sent packets to it, basically, sending messages to myself.  If AvareX for linux binds to wlan0, all should be fine.

Thank you for confirming.

Stratux will not send traffic to itself (ie, ap0, wlan0, lo) unless the address is explicitly entered in the static IP list on the Stratux settings page.

You can also add static IPs to /etc/stratux-static-hosts.conf but its kind of a pain to get around the read-only filesystem overlay.

Thats all anyone probably needs to try and do a co-hosted Stratux/AvareX install, assuming thats what the OP from 5 days ago was asking.

It would still probably require some adjustments as the Stratux install makes the entire root filesystem read-only which probably doesnt work well with AvareX.

Thanks to everyone above, I did get it to work completely on the same Raspberry PI but it is kind of hacky.  I configured the wired Ethernet port eth0 to have a fixed IP address.  I then set that IP address in the static IP addresses described above.  I could then turn wireless off and still have date flowing to AvareX.  It is silly but it works
