Does anyone have an Android tablet recommendation for Avare and Avare X? I would like a little more real-estate than my S21 phone. Something not too big that will fit in a RAM mount. I know nothing about tablets, I'm just hoping to find something that works well with Avare and my Stratux and hopefully works without a data plan. Good battery life would be nice too. Maybe I can find a Black Friday deal.

A few choices.
iPad mini 8 inch display is outstanding.  Cost is higher than android tablets, but you can still get an iPad 6 new from Amazon for $350 if you act fast. Almost all gone. The Ram mount cradle is customized for that model alone and best I have seen for any tablet. The only other Con is the absence of an internal GPS unlesa you upgrade to the much more costly version with cellular connectivity.  If your panel feeding GPS and ADSB in fail, you cannot navigate with the tablet alone.

Small Android tablet options include the Samsung A9 international wifi at about $135. It has internal GPS and its  8.7 inch display is nearly as bright as iPad mini, and Samsung will offer several years updates to Android. No custom Ram mount but generic ones are available. (For just a few dollars more, I bought the cellular version in case I ever decided to use it in the future.)

The third option I have owned myself is the Lenovo M9. It has a full 9 inch display comparable to the Samsung in brightness when viewed straight on. The 4mb/64gb version can he purchased on sale for $99, sometimes only direct from Lenovo. It's got better battery life than the Samsung, and internal GPS.  Android updates from Lenovo will probably be limited to two version, while Samsung will issue more. Not a big issue if used mostly for efb.

All of these would be fine in the cockpit for any efb app,  but the original legacy version of Avare is not available to load on iPad. At present, I still prefer the legacy version.

The only other consideration may be  the possible need for an audio output jack on the tablet to connect audio if your headset or panel don't support Bluetooth audio input, or if you are using Bluetooth to connect tablet to another device (e.g. AHRS, autopilot, etc).  The audio from most efb apps will announce traffic or SUA alerts or navigation directions.

Good luck

For smaller tablet I continue to have good luck, good resolution and brightness with my (very) old Nexus 7 2013 which is 2nd edition.  The 2012 also works but has reduced specs. Avbl cheap on Facebook market place. I only use legacy Avare ...7 inch tablet on a knee board as zero room in my stick configured Midget Mustang. Also hardwired into my USB ports.

Ps, and don't load it up with other stuff, just Avare and one or two apps. I usually it starts slow at turn but once it gets Avare nicely responsive.

Agreed, 600 nits 2013 Nexus 7 is the solid legacy Avare device, often under $70 on ebay, mine is Android 11 on a custom ROM.

That said, I like the mini iPad 5 for the 3.5mm jack for Avare X, BUT, it is a bit aged vs the 6 and I fear being locked out of Avare X 2 years before a mini 6, if Apple Store plays like Google Play store.

There are few cheap, solid or pricey, solid Androids in 8 inch format.

Thanks for the tablet feedback. I'm thinking of going with the Samsung A9. $104 on Amazon. It looks like they are all international version so hopefully that doesn't matter.

Mike,
Be advised that the Lenovo M9 is more durable construction than the Samsug A9. The Samsung is more likely to break if bent or dropped. You will need a more protective case for the Samsung than for the Lenovo. I have the Lenovo for about a year now with rubberized skin case.

It's pretty hard to beat a Samsung tablet, although they aren't as inexpensive as they used to be.  I have two.  A 10 inch and 8 inch.  Check out Best Buy for a possible Black Friday deal.

I used both the Lenovo M9 and the M8.  Both work with AvareX and Stratux.  As stated before, you can find the M9 on sale for $99 and I bought a used M8 for around $50 on eBay.  The M8 is slower, but it still works great.

Currently I have three tablets I use for Avare and AvareX with an EchoUAT adsb in/out.
1) Samsung Tab A7 Lite from 2021 - solid performer but not being updated anymore.  Just getting long in the tooth.
2) Aldocube iPlay mini 50 pro - also solid.  connects to the EchoUAT and works well Android 13 installed.  Screen is bright but is a little shiny.
3) Aldocube iPlay mini 60 pro- Same as above with the Android 14 installed.  Screen appears slightly brighter then the 50.

On both of the newer tablets I am contemplating adding and anti glare screen on them.  but they both work well and I have the extra apps on them I need to get close to foreflight functionality for free.

I have written a howto for foreflight functionality using Avare as the basis if anybody is interested.

Thanks,
Sean

I'd be interested in seeing the howto.

Here is a link to the Google doc.  I am in the process of updating it as I go along:

If you have any suggestions that would be helpful.

Walmart currently has an onn 7" tablet (2024 edition with Android 14 Go, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage) for $39 during "Black Friday" sale.  Seemed snappy enough when demoed at the store.  My intended use is yoke mounted to replace old Android phone just running Avare legacy against my reliable stratux for TIS/FIS.

If anyone is looking for a tablet, Best Buy is having a Black Friday deal on the Lenovo M9 for $79.99. With the good recommendations on it here I just picked one up to use with Avare.

Maybe not as good of a deal as I thought then. Hopefully it will work for Avare.

FYI, this $40 tablet has been working well as a dedicated yoke-mount for Avare*.
