I'm not sure I like that. The FAA favors the big EFB players to get even stronger by allowing them a head-start?

I don't know the exact agreement Garmin has with the FAA with respect to Mobile Clearances, but if the agreement includes public access to the results of the early access study, then that can be a good thing for everyone. Garmin originally developed GDL-90 (the protocol used by ADS-B receivers), which they made public jointly with the FAA, so I don't have issues with Garmin's business practice. Foreflight, on the other hand, uses a proprietary mode, and makes private deals with companies to use that mode.

I'm sure the FAA wants the widest possible adoption of their recently announced mobile clearance technology. Even though the announcement I heard only specifically mentioned that FAA were collaborating with ForeFlight and Garmin, it can't be limited to just those two because the FAA is publicly funded. Therefore, I've got to assume that the FAA must have a mobile clearance api of some sort, and it should be publicly available. Assuming that is true, does anyone know where that api might be published, and for the development team, what are the plans for bringing the mobile clearance capabilities into AvareX?

It might be made avalable to the Avare/AvareX apps via the current interface with Leidos, in which case the programing effort could be pretty minimal...

I've been asking for some sort of mobile clearance every time I've gone to OSH.  What I had envisioned was something similar to the existing PDC system but sent via a text message to your phone.  

From the end users standpoint you don't need anything else beyond the existing cell phone you already have, what needs to exist on the FAA's side? I have no idea.  The advantage to this is it would be completely hardware/software independent and then it would be up to the various EFB manufactures if desired to incorporate the text message into their software.

fltaware.com is all I've used since forever.  its stupidly easy and fast.  until someone shows me another way, there is no other way.
