Hi all,

I'm recording each flight's track for an instructional purpose: back on the ground, my student and I use the recorded track to analyze the flight.

As of the last (v10.1.0) update, Avare reports the tracks have been saved, as seen in the attached screenshot. However, I cannot find the saved tracks where they used to be - in the "/sdcard/Download/com.ds.avare/tracks" directory. The tablet is a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 (SM-T700), running Android v6.0.1.

Therefore, my question is: where are the track (i.e. *.KML) files saved  in this, new version of Avare? I've spent over two hours combing the whole tablet storage for the files...no joy.

(Again: Avare v10.1.0, Android 6.0.1, Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 (SM-T700))

Thank you for your help!

Ferdi B.

I used to use the tracks from every flight, as the option to have avare email the track to me on exit worked well.   It stopped working on v10.1.0, even though the option is still there to select.

Were there any actual improvements made in v10.1.0 or just these big steps backward?

I had this same issue yesterday.  Was not a problem before v10.1.0.  Also noticed that Tools is gone.  WiFi now part of IO.

This is an issue for me:  I use those kmls after every flight for post-flight analysis. What do we need to do to restore this functionality?

Tracks will be stored internally. You can export them using Preferences.
Thanks

If you did Not select another Directory / Storage location:
Look under Internal Storage > Download>COM.DS.AVARE>Tracks.
They are No longer on the SD Card.

As I said the functionality is there. You need to Export data from Preferences.
After export, you may open the zip to get the tracks.
See attached.

I am a big fan of Avare and truly appreciate all of the development work baked into the application. I am currently flying off Phase 1 flight test hours on my slow-build RV7A project. From my airplane rental days, I am familiar with Avare core functionalities (navigation, situational awareness, AP control, and ADS-B display). I’ve only now become interested in the application flight tracking capability.

I spent a few hours experimenting with the new v10.1.0 export workflow and have been able to download, locate, and unzip the Tracks folder. I am able to share the specific KML file I need (identified by date and time) to my Google drive. From there I can open the file in Google Earth Pro and view the track. A little file editing cleans up the track and there are display options available. I can make a JPEG to share with friends and family. Other workflows may work, and this one feels a bit too convoluted, but it works.

I’m curious how others visualize and review their tracks. It appears a number of users are unable to access tracks the way they used to. Was there ever a way to open a past track within Avare, or has it always been only a real-time visualization? With my limited experience it looks like now, once you turn off the real-time track, visualization is lost, unless you export to another tool like I’ve described above. A simpler/faster way to share flight paths would be awesome.

Thank you. That is helpful for doing a one time large dump of data from the system. However it is really not the same functionality that was there before.
After each flight, I would stop the tracks, and it would ask me for the email address to which I would send just the KML file. I would enter the email address for the young eagle student who had flown with me, and they would get an email with their KML file attached. Total time to do this was approximately 30 seconds. In order to export the data and then send it as an email, well so far I have been waiting three minutes and it is about a quarter of the way through., Then I have to unzip it, then I have to attach it to an email, then I sent the email. If I have multiple passengers  during the day, I have to do this for each passenger. So, the functionality really is not there at all. The date is there, yes, which I appreciate. But the email functionality is not there.
Is there any hope that this will be restored?Thank you: I do appreciate all the work that you do on this avare, and I have loved using it for years.

I agree John.  The email after turning Tracks Off was much better.  Took a long time do download and extract the .zip file containing the desired .kml file.

Report: twenty minutes later, the export is about 75% done, but the progress bar has stopped moving. I am pretty sure it is hung up. I will check on it when I get home from work, but I am pessimistic it will complete the export.

I tried this on two separate tablets.    It is very time consuming and clunky compared to the former email method of just forwarding the kml file.

Also, on both tablets the generated zip file could not be opened in either Android or by Windows after copying to my desktop.   Both tablets and Windows said the files were invalid.    However, 7zip was able to open the generated file and access the tracks.

My flight plan files are still all MIA.

Yes thank you for working on this in the next release. In the winter I may land on 30 or more lakes and ponds many of which I don't know the name of so nice to be able to get they email with the track.

Well...looks like many of you succeeded in opening the zip  file. I was not that fortunate: upon attempting to open the zip file, I received the message "Zip file cannot be opened", regardless of the place where I tried to open it: tablet or laptop. I tried it again after deleting Avare 10.1.0, purging all its data files from the tablet, and reinstalling Avare. Still no joy.

However, even if this worked out and I could unzip the file, such solution is totally inefficient, IMHO: it is unrealistic to ask my student to hang around for another 1/2 hour until the file is zipped, then decompressed, and I can extract the desired track file. IMHO, replacing the previous option - to save the files locally or email them, with the current solution was not the best choice.

Moving forward, my solution to this issue was  to downgrade to v10.0.8, the last working version prior to this version that brought up some headaches for me. I find that I don't need all the bells and whistles the newer versions come with, as long as the older version works just fine. (i.e, "Don't try to fix it if it ain't broken.")

A BIG "Thank you!" to Apps4Av developers for making the older versions available for manual install!!

Kind regards,
Ferdi

Many thanks for working on this. In the meantime, does the current version (10.1.0) retain KML files for only a limited time? When I extract the exported zip file, I see the past week's KML files in the tracks folder, but none of the KML files I recorded prior to this week using 10.1.0. (The KML files from 10.0.8 and earlier are still in the Download/com.ds.avare/Tracks folder.)

I had the same experience as you where the tablets and the windows desktop machines could not open the zip file.    I had to use a third-party application (7zip) which was able to open it.

We have given up on anything that exchanges data as security changes with google keeps us busy fixing them.
The next release is just placed on the store and will be available shortly. Please see the IO tab named Tools.
You can export tracks from there and takes less than a second.
Thanks

Please consider bringing back tracks as kml files written to com.ds.avare/tracks. I use these tracks to review flights with my students.

I see that the newest release (as of a few hours ago) adds an export option via IO -> Tools. I tried it and the workflow feels like a big step backward. If I forget to do this before closing the app, it seems that the tracks are lost forever. Once I do export them, I still have to figure out a way to extract the contents before I can display them in google earth, or the tool I use for overlaying them on plates.

I would really love to see the KML files get dropped into com.ds.avare/tracks like they were before.

The selection of the export function is obscured and nearly unreadable on two of my tablets.   (Pics attached).

Also, this is still pretty cumbersome for people like me who frequently use the tracks from each flight.    The previous function of emailing the last track was very useful and I'd ask for that previous functionality to be restored.
It appears the current system exports all of the stored tracks every time, and there is no way to select just the last track or which tracks are desired.   Also, it appears that there is no way to delete previous track history, so does the track export file just keep getting bigger with time?   Is there not a way to purge old tracks and limit the size of the export file?

Limiting the size of the export file can be crucial for tablets with limited memory.   10.1.0 generated a file over 1GB on one of my tablets and caused a lot of problems.

I'd still like to be able to recover the flight plan files that 10.1.0 stopped access to.   Is this possible?

Here's what the Tool page looks like on two of my tablets:

I fear there's going to be a bunch of repetition in this, but this chain has become so long I've lost track.

Question 1:

Can you clarify what you'll be working on for the next release? I *think* you're referring to the rather frightening aspect where every track ever recorded is exported every time, and there's no way to delete any of them.

If my interpretation is right, great, if not, and my understanding of the current behavior is correct, may I urge this be fixed with some expeditiousness, otherwise the files will become unmanageable, and worse, the app will presumably kill either itself for lack of permitted storage, or kill the tablet by filling everything.

Question 2:
What is the "internal storage" that's currently used. Can I get to it directly, and simply bypass all the messing around? Would the answer to this change if I rooted my device? Or if I put my device into developer mode (actually, it's already in developer mode).

Question 3:
Other apps (notably file managers) seem to be able to access the file system, is there not a permission that grants this? I guess that's too simple, and I can't really believe it's as simple as that and you missed it :(

Question 4:
The user waypoints file in the original directory is now ignored. I tried to use the tools "import" feature, but absolutely every file I could see using the file system navigator was greyed out. Can anyone tell me how I get these points back in the system (and, how I "turn them off", since I don't always want them showing--that used to be simply move the file in the file manager and then move it back later.

Thanks for any input.
Cheers,
Simon

Yes will give an option to delete tracks in next build.

Only if you have root access to the device.

Question 3:
Other apps (notably file managers) seem to be able to access the file system, is there not a permission that grants this? I guess that's too simple, and I can't really believe it's as simple as that and you missed it :(

With scoped storage a user can grant permission to a folder to a fil explorer on the fly. To access app folders I don't think that's possible or if at all Google requires a permission and that only works with registered apps that google trusts.

Question 4:
The user waypoints file in the original directory is now ignored. I tried to use the tools "import" feature, but absolutely every file I could see using the file system navigator was greyed out. We can add a menu to delete these in the next release.

Thanks for any input.

Thanks for these clarifications, I have one follow on:

Did you mean to *add* these? I'm trying to get my user waypoints to show up, but the import function doesn't let me open the file at all, it's just greyed out. I'm not sure if my question was unclear, or if there was a typo in the response, or something else.

Thanks for all your work on this app, despite google making it so hard, it's really good.

+1 on this for me.  I want to import my user waypoints KML, and i select import from the i/o tools page but my waypoints.kml is grayed out and I can not select it.

Are the KML files still saved anywhere?   I can't find them now.   If the email fails for some reason can I still get the file?

There's a delete tracks function in the Tools menu now, but it doesn't say what it's actually deleting.   All of them?   The last one?   Everything but the last one?   Can we choose to just delete stuff older than we need?   If there was a way to find where they're stored it'd be helpful to at least be able to manage them manually.

This is still problematic.   With 10.1.4 it populates a file in an email, but that file seems to be corrupted (multiple attempts on multiple days from different flights).    If I revert to the "export files" functions and select tracks, it dumps a file with tracks up to but not past May 8, presumably before it updated to whatever version stopped populating that file.

So at the moment I'm back to not having any means to obtain the KML file for the flight.
