I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab2 loaded with Avare which I haven't used for a couple of years. Plan to start using it again so I went to download all the necessary updates, and that failed apparently because android 4.2.2 is no longer supported.  OK, so did a manual download of Avare 8.0.4...downloaded all the charts and other data I plan to use.  Everything works fine with regard to AFDs, Plates, Terrain, Topo maps, etc., but the charts (Sectional, WACs) will not display on the map screen. The map screen is black and says "Download Sectional xxx" aside from the chart the other data displays normally. I have downloaded the charts several times and it always say download successful.

I'm thinking I may have to wipe this version and try an earlier version of manual download.  If that is the case, does anyone know which is the newest version that works with android 4.2.2?
TIA

Tom,

Android 4.3 is the minimum as of mid 2019.  There was an announcement put out about 8 or 9 months before the change to give users a chance to acquire new hardware if needed.

You might be able to load the software package on your tablet but due to changes in how the charts are generate the older software is unable to display them.

ISTR that the problem you describe (everything displays on Android 8.0.4 except Sectionals) is a separate issue, perhaps something to do with where Avare thinks it is.  Someone with a better memory than I might be able to chime in with the solution and save you a search of the list archives.

Tom, Chip, et. al.

There were several notifications made about the minimum software requirements, first was https://groups.google.com/d/msg/apps4av-forum/eRIt-6_KOTA/3GfyGx-gAgAJ  issued in November of 2018 notifying users of the pending changes that would require a newer Android OS, at that time it was believed version 4.1 would have been the minimum.

The original message was followed by this announcement https://groups.google.com/d/msg/apps4av-forum/eRIt-6_KOTA/Bs_cI7EjEwAJ  which was actually part of the same thread which was posted on July 31, 2019 that 4.3 would become the minimum usable version.

As a reminder make sure you take note of the last section in the message in where it says that this past January it was anticipated that only Android 5.0 and greater would be supported,  I'm not sure if this has come to pass but I'd keep that in mind for any tablet you purchase as a replacement.

Just to put this in perspective
Android version    Released
4.1                         July 2012
4.3                         July 2013
4.4                        October 2013
5.0                        November 2014
6.0                        October 2015

My bad.  I misread "Avare 8.0.4" as "Android 8.0.4".  Nevermind.

Jeff, thanks.  Chip, you too.  Tom, this was done to save more than 25% disk space on charts.  This is an android version thing, not a hardware thing, so you could potentially install an alternative rom.  I like lineageos
https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/espressowifi

Your tablet isn't still supported there, but you could install an older android that is still newer than your current, and it would likely meet avare requirements for the foreseeable future.

5.0 will come eventually... but we haven't gotten their yet.  Higher priorities lately...

Thank you Peter.  I looked through the info to possibly update the rom and frankly it's beyond my abilities, and this a.m. I went ahead and ordered a new Galaxy TabA, so I should be set when that arrives.

Now, I just hope my Dual XGPS170 receiver is not too outdated to work!

Thanks to all for helping me through this!
Tom
