Hello everyone,

for my term paper I have to analyse a file my professor sent me. Unfortunately, the file is pretty big and it takes quite a long time to basically load anything. It's super slow in reacting  and sometimes not responding at all. Is there any way to speed this up ? Would it help to just break up the file into two parts ? I'm using the newest version of AntConc (4.3.1) in Windows 11.

Thank you,
Hanna Schumacher

Hi Hanna,

All files are stored in an indexed database, so the length of file shouldn't matter. Which tools are you finding are slow?

Laurence.

Hi Laurence,

thank you for answering ! For me, the whole program is slow. For example, when I type in a search query, I'll write the word and it takes quite long for it to appear. That's just what happens in general when I click on anything or I wanna scroll. When I use the tools it sometimes takes longer than other times. Another example would be that I've used the KWIC and it took 25.2117 seconds and with the collocate tool it took 76.7598 seconds. Maybe I'm just impatient and that's the normal amount of time it takes.

Best, Hanna

Hi Hanna,

Results in the KWIC tool should be returned within a second. Collocates can take longer, but 76 seconds is far too long. If you try the demo corpus, is everything running fine?

If possible, can you export the corpus .db file that you created (via the corpus manager) and email to me. I can then load it into my version of AntConc and see why it's so slow.

Laurence.

Hi Laurence,

yes, the demo corpus works fine. I've attached my corpus file. The text comes from a forum,so maybe there's symbols or characters it's struggling with.
