OMG, I posted on here 6 months ago after a talonavicular fusion and have continued to read all the posts enjoying people's successes and feeling people's pain. Like lots of you I have had a torrid time, nerve damage and pain, pain walking in the boot, pain out of the boot but was told on my 3 month post op visit to give it time and come back in 6 months. Great I thought hoping it would get better but it's just got worse especially over the last 6 weeks, it's been like walking on glass with every step taken. On today visit I'm told the fusion failed hence the pain, I could cry, got an emergency scan booked to confirm but my surgeon's view is another operation to remove the screws then insert plates and screws to fasten everything together again with a minimum of another 3 months out of action. I am really really fed up now, god knows what work will say.

Oh, you poor thing. So sorry you are facing another op. It is 6 months since my same op as you. I had a second op 4 weeks ago to remove one of the 9 screws!! It was apparently impinging on the fibula. So part of the fibula and tibia bones were removed to get the screw out and then he debrided the peroneal tendon that was inflamed.. i also have plantar fascitis so it is painful walking!!!! I thought by now I would be walking pain free. Haha!! It also is painful where the second op was done. It all seems never ending and I am sure you feel that way as well. What you now have to endure is worse than what I have had to. Try and think positive and hope this time fusion works. I have now 8 screws in there and a plate. I am surprised a plate was not put in originally. When is this,op,going to be done? Do not worry about work, easy for me to say as I am retired but your health is more important. I know it is all very frustrating. Thoughts are with you. Patti xx

I had been reading your posts Patti and often thought you were having a rough time of it and could associate with most things you were going through thinking I hope to god I didn't need more surgery.
Sounds like you're on the road to recovery now though.
I have an emergency scan next week and see the surgeon the week after to decide where he goes with it but he did say he needed to operate quickly so I'm anticipating within the next 4 weeks not looking forward to it again but need to think about the positives and just write this year off, it's 6 months today since my surgery.

Hi Russ.  I had ankle fusion about 10 years ago.  Reading your message sounded like what I went through:  non-union.  My surgeon didn't admit that until 6 months after surgery.  I saw another ortho doc for a second opinion.  That's what I recommend for you, a second opinion.  I had 3 subsequent surgeries to correct what the first doctor did.  Good Luck, Russ.   Hang in there!

I am 1 week post op after my second fusion due to none union, 3 months in a cast none weight bearing this time my surgeon is saying, first 6 weeks strict elevation he's also put some plates in my foot to help healing process and to make my foot more stable!!. He says we need to take every precaution to aid fusion. On a positive note the pain this time around is nothing like my first operation in February so fingers crossed.

I am having some shockwave Therapy done on the plantar fascitis and hoping it works as nothing else has!!! Just want to get back to walking normally without pain. Still get swelling but was told this could continue for a year or more. Get pain in the side of my ankle some days and hoping this will go eventually. It all seems never ending at times. had the fusion done in January. Patti

I'm 7 weeks post op and this time it's feeling good. 8 lots of metalwork in my foot holding everything together, 12 weeks in a plaster none weight bearing ( more than half way now thank goodness) then 12 weeks in an aircast  boot he says but I'm hoping it will be less. I've not needed any pain relief since 8 days post op. It's been a log slog but hopefully worth it this time. Keep your head up.

Sounds like this one might work! 12 weeks in a cast is a long time. I remember after 8 weeks it was so good getting out of it. Hope all goes well this time. Been having shockwave therapy for the plantar fasciitis and it seems to have helped. Sometimes still get the odd shooting pain but hopefully that stops soon. Had to see my other orthopaedic surgeon ( he does not do ankles) about my right knee which is artificial!! I am having a lot of pain in it with all the extra work it has done this year and he said I needed a cortisone injection in it, so will get that done. Told him about the pain and swelling I am get right around the back and sides at the top of the ankle and he suggested I go back to the ankle surgeon as I should not still be having pain!!! Pain is not where the fusion was done!! IT is never bloody ending!! Patti

Good luck everyone! I’m now 10 days post op surgery #2 for 2019. This surgery removed osteophytes (bone spurs) blocking my subtalar joint motion and cleaned up the area known as the lateral gutter or tarsal tunnel which was also full of osteophytes and scar tissue. He recycled some of this material and grafted it into the area to stabilize where the fibula supports the lateral ankle.
I woke up with a completely numb foot which has improved (and, no, they did not do a nerve block), but the top of my foot remains numb. Hopefully this will gradually go away.
I’m nonweightbearing another week then 6 weeks of slowly increasing my activity level. Hoping to then return to work...and life.

Take care,
Julie

I was in a car accident that caused my initial problems and had two nonunions as a result. I had to have several surgeries for all of the problems and ultimately the ankle fusion. My bones weren't fusing due to underlying endometriosis and damage to my ovaries. Nonunions can happen due to diabetes, smoking, or other issues with hormones (like untreated thyroid or adrenal disorders) so if you are still having trouble make sure that the doctors are sending you to a specialist to look into everything. You can use an external bone stimulator that is an electric device you use once a day that helps the bone heal. You don't feel anything and it only lasts 15 minutes. That helped my arm recover. You can also go to a specialist who can hook you up with a fixator on your ankle (I had two) that will help the ankle heal. It isn't fun, but there are options. Also, they can't diagnose nonunion until 6 months out because some people are slow to heal and that is how bones work, so your doctor isn't lying to you, FYI.

Thanks for the info Jennifer, I'm now 13 weeks post op and after 3 months in plaster just gone into an aircast boot, thankfully on my hospital visit last week everything is looking like this fusion is on track.
25% weight bearing to start with building it up over the next 4 weeks until full weight bearing, back in 6 weeks for further xrays, fingers crossed it holds out my surgeon did say this is the critical time so fingers crossed.

That sucks. I had the same fusion surgery which also led to a non-union. Was told it's the hardest joint to fuse. So, last May I had a triple fusion. The Dr said if I fuse all 3, and one doesn't fuse,
the other two will hold evreything together. Glad I did that, becasue the non-union from before is the slowest to fuse. It's about 50% and that's probably the best it's going to be. Having some pain if I do too much. We may take out all the hardware to see if that helps.

Thanks Dennis, I had another operation in Early October 5 hours of surgery to repair the damage done first time, 3 months in a cast, 6 weeks in a boot all none weight bearing but I'm now finally walking. Probably 80% better now than it was before, still some pain and swelling but I'm hoping that will ease in time, I just have to remember I've not walked on it for 18 weeks so it will need building up again. Keep battling on.

Hang in there Russ!! One day at a time! This is a long road back to get better! We will probably never be the same again, but Patience is what we need and to keep trying to do what the doc says and we will get better! Stay positive and count our blessings that we have in our life, this will keep us going to work hard and get better. Water therapy is good when the doc says it is OK to do so. God Bless!
