Hi everyone,

Made a post previously but it somehow disappeared. Can someone help me with the following?

I am pretty confused by the Anki options available in each flashcard. In some flashcards there are options of Again and Good. While other cards have Again, Good and Easy. There is also a variant which has Again, Hard, Good and Easy. How come different flashcards have different options?

Also, the intervals for each option tend to be different too. For example a Good option in one card can be 12 days while a Good option in another card can be 1 day.

Screenshots of my settings and sample flashcards are as follows. Many thanks.

This happens during the learning of new cards or when you say that you don't know the meaning of a card. When I card is introduced (picture 3), you can choose between Again (I don't know this card) or Good ( I already know).
If you choose again, Anki will show it again some times as in the option "Steps" in picture 4. In your case, it will be shown after 1, 10 and 180 minutes. When they appear, you'll have picture 2. You can say that you still don't understand (Again) and start it from the beginning. Or that you understand (Good) and then it will show it again following the rule above. Or if you judge that you really understand what it means, you can press Easy, and Anki will not show it again in some minutes, but in the next day (graduating interval option).
About the first picture, this will be the options you have for normal cards (not new nor failed), you can either choose to relearn that card (Again), or say that you remember that card. If you remember, you can choose how well you remember and when Anki should show it again.

For short, new cards or failed cards will have an interval of 1 day, while normal cards will have a longer interval, as you already know their meanings.

Is it clear?

Hi Renato,

Thank you for your reply.

Would like to clarify with you on the following "and then it will show it again following the rule above. Or if you judge that you really understand what it means, you can press Easy, and Anki will not show it again in some minutes, but in the next day (graduating interval option)"

Initially, I would see picture 3, upon clicking Again, then it would be then be shown after 180 minutes? What happens if I still click Again even after reaching the 180 minutes step?

If however, I click Easy, it would show up after 1 day as indicated in the option?

Also, whats the difference between a graduating interval and easy interval?

Thank you once again.

When you click "Again", you start (or restart) the learning process. It will be shown again in 1, 10 and 180 minutes.

Yes, clicking on "Easy"  stops the process.

Also, whats the difference between a graduating interval and easy interval?
From the manual: (http://ankisrs.net/docs/manual.html)

Graduating interval is the delay between answering Good on a card with no steps left, and seeing the card again.

Easy interval is the delay between answering easy on a learning card and seeing it in review mode for the first time.

If you follow the whole process of learning, the next interval will be the graduating interval.
However, if in the middle of the process you press "easy", it will impose the "easy interval". This is useful when you are studying a material that contains some information that you already know (usually made by others), and you don't want to waste time on a card you already know.
If I'm not mistaken, there are different options for new and failed cards (check on "Lapses" tab). So if your configurations are different, the intervals will be different and it will looks like it is not behaving correctly, but it is.

I hope it is clear now, but do not hesitate to contact me again.
By the way, I strongly advise you to read the Anki manual. You don't have to read it all, but it has some details that are not intuitive and also shows some tips on how to use it more efficiently.
