Dear Sir/Madam,

I have been using Anki Droid for a couple of months now since my laptop is incompatible with the regular Anki app and I have had a good experience creating and reviewing cards. However, the app will crash at least several times in an hour. It says 'Anki Droid is not responding, do you want to wait or close the app'. No matter which option I choose when I reopen the app it keeps crashing again. I have synced the app and it's up to date so I'm not sure what to do to stop it from crashing and not responding. Any help would be appreciated.

Best wishes,
Amy

Sorry this is happening to you! Not sure why your laptop is incompatible with Anki Desktop (it works on nearly any platform...) but I will assume there is a good (or, maybe not good, but "real") reason...

So first make sure you are using AnkiDroid - this is the support list for AnkiDroid (not Anki Mobile, and definitely not the group of copy-cat apps called "Anki <something>" on the Play store that are trying to make a buck on the name Anki

Assuming it is AnkiDroid, then I can't say exactly what's happening to cause the issue but I can say that we have fixed many similar issues in our latest releases and you might try a parallel build of 2.17alpha series which you can grab here: https://github.com/ankidroid/Anki-Android/releases

Many of our users with crashes or "app not responding" errors have seen success moving forward to the alpha series

I'm getting this too, on a Chromebook. Often it seems to be when I am switching to settings or deck options. I thought perhaps that was due to misconfigured permissions, as the app didn't have permissions for storage or writing to the anki db to start with. But now I have granted those permissions, I'm still getting crashes, the last was when I went to edit a card whilst reviewing.

Here's the debug info:

Hi there - sorry this is happening for you as well! I've installed the "Desktop AVD" chromebook emulator from Google which is supposed to help me reproduce these, but so far I do not reproduce any crash.

I see you are on the latest alpha (awesome, thank you) and I was really hoping that with your magical ACRA UUID shared (thank you again!) I would be able to find the crash trace and figure this out, but unfortunately there are no crash traces for that UUID.

Are you sure in settings that you have crash reporting turned on? If it is already on and we are just not receiving reports then I'm not sure why not. If it is off, then perhaps when you turn it on and mention here that you have had another crash and a report went out, I'll be able to see it

Thanks -

-Mike

I think I've turned on error reporting (I think I had it turned off in Chromebook settings, and the "Error reporting mode" option in AnkiDroid was set to "Ask me" which I have now set to "Always report"  - although it never did ask me).

I've now had the problem again - I tried to edit a card that I was reviewing and the edit card screen was displayed, but I wasn't able to edit or select anything. After a few seconds the "Ankidroid is not responding" message appeared and I selected close. After that the app immediately started again without any input from me, and I closed it normally.

Hopefully it's now generated a crash report!
