repo sync fails on the latest Ubuntu

The headline pretty much says it all. I have a standard Ubuntu installation, I followed the instructions and "repo sync" fails with all sorts of errors: from segfault in git, to for example:

platform/libcore:
remote: Counting objects: 1, done        
remote: Finding sources: 100% (1/1)           
remote: Total 1 (delta 0), reused 1 (delta 0)        
Receiving objects: 100% (1/1), 361 bytes | 361.00 KiB/s, done.
error: inflate: data stream error (invalid code -- missing end-of-block)
fatal: packed object 08c1aef4aa8e76f4db9b566ff9eaad741adb96ab (stored in /media/demiurg/Android/.repo/projects/libcore.git/objects/pack/pack-fca559eb141366961ba1e283a1633fa52c87b764.pack) is corrupt
error: https://android.googlesource.com/platform/libcore did not send all necessary objects


My system works fine, I have a very good internet connection (fiber). I'm lost...even before I started.
