Dear all,

I have to establish a build environment for android. I was going through the documentation provided on android website in order to find out that which ubuntu version is best for installation. On one page it says

If you're developing against the AOSP master branch, use either Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic Beaver) or the latest versions of macOS and Xcode with command line tools installed.

and on the other, it says

The Android build is routinely tested in house on Ubuntu LTS (14.04) and Debian testing. Most other distributions should have the required build tools available.
You need a 64-bit version of Ubuntu (14.04 is recommended).

Kindly let me know which version should I install 18.04 or 14.04

Thank you

Hello

I have a build environment for Android 9 setup with 16.04 and works perfectly and to actually setup the build I followed https://source.android.com/setup/build/downloading.

Hope this helps

I think you can go with 18 as iam using 18 only to compile Android 9 as well as 7 too no issues faced till now

In general, at least with modern versions of Android, you shouldn't run into any issues with any fairly modern linux distribution. And with each release, we've been using fewer and fewer tools from your host distribution to help with this. Please report any problems you run into.

Our build farm is still standardized on Ubuntu 14.04 because it still needs to build some older versions of Android, which is why that text around "tested internally" is still there. Our developers are on a version of Debian Testing that is much more up to date.

Hi,
I wrote down some instructions for building the AOSP using a Docker container based on Ubuntu 18.04. In case it is helpful, here is the link: https://www.raywenderlich.com/10197539-building-the-android-open-source-project

Cheers!

The AOSP build tools aren't highly sensitive to the exact version of Ubuntu they are being run on. I have used versions 14.04, 16.04, and 18.04. Within the last month, I upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04, and I have no doubt that the AOSP build will work on that platform. I tend to use stable, long term support (LTS) versions of Ubuntu, just to keep away from experimental versions of packages. Any LTS version will build AOSP just fine.

Will changes made and tested on Ubuntu 20.04 be accepted as commits against the AOSP master branch??
The reason I ask this is because the documentation recommends Ubuntu 18.04 as OS (https://source.android.com/setup/build/requirements#os) for building against AOSP master
