Hello,

I am a missionary in Papua New Guinea.  The people among whom I work generally do not have internet access.  I am searching for a way to give them the Trade language Bible in Tok Pisin (Buk Baibel) for their Android phones. I personally do not have an Android so I am not familiar with the And Bible app.  But some other missionaries have recommended And Bible as being a possibility for what I am wanting to do.

Would it be possible for me to download something on my PC or onto my iPhone such that I could set them up in the bush so that they can read Buk Baibel on their Android phones?

I came across Luke's comment from Mar 24, 2016, 12:02:04 PM that he does this all the time (https://groups.google.com/g/and-bible/c/qljQhz_igwU/m/gKSoU8fnBQAJ) but I am not very tech savvy to be able to follow what he is saying there.  Is there someone that would be able to walk me through how to do that?  Thanks much!

Peter

Hi,

You need to distribute the installable programme. Preferentially bundled with the texts you want already going with it.

I can not walk you through the iPhone part, but here the larger concept, others, maybe local friends can fill you in with the detail.

Take a Android phone without any And Bible install, install And Bible and the texts you want to share.

Install an APK bundling app like APKShare.

Bundle up And Bible again into an installable program (this time with the text inside) and forward it into your iPhone.

Keep it in the iPhone ready to share via Bluetooth to your local friends.

Pass it into their phone and tell them to install it. There will likely come a moan from the phone " do you want allow Installation from an untrusted source?" Or some such. Say yes to that.

It is on their phone. Enjoy.

This is the high level walk through. Hope it helps!

Peter

Hi Peter,

I see Peter von Kaehne already answered to some extent. I don't think going the APKShare route will necessarily work very well, especially in latest Android versions with more file access restrictions.

Here's what I would do.
Get the apk from here (this is latest stable version, 3.3): https://github.com/AndBible/and-bible/releases/latest. Tap the "Assets" drop down, and then download the .apk file.
I would recommend version 4.0 which is now in beta but it is already quite stable. However, probably within another month it should also be in stable. If you want to share the beta with them, you can download from here: https://github.com/AndBible/and-bible/releases

Create a zip file with the document(s) you want to share with your friends. This can be easily done from And Bible by exporting (backing up) documents. Or it can also be done manually from a computer. I can help you with getting a zip file with the specific documents you would like, if you would like my help.

Share the apk file and the zip file with your friend.

By tapping the apk, it will ask them if they want to install it, where they might have to give permission to install from untrusted source.
When opening And Bible for the first time, they can select the option "Load documents from zip" and select the zip file to install the documents.

God bless,
Timmy

Hi Peter, on second thought, and another And Bible developer's note. I would only recommend the stable release for distribution, especially since the users might not have access for easy updating if some bug shows up.

The stable release is found at this link: https://github.com/AndBible/and-bible/releases/latest

God bless,

Hi Peter

And Bible is perfect for what you want - offline, lots of documents and all are free. And as Tim said, version 4 is significantly easier to use and has many more features and should be available in the next month or two.

As to getting files from one device to another, in Myanmar everyone used to use Zapya. It is  available for iPhone and Android and makes it pretty easy to share files to multiple people at once using wifi which is a lot faster than bluetooth. But you need to install that first - easy if you have internet - and your people might not have it.

If you do have internet where you are then you have lots of options. Uploading the backup files straight from And Bible to Google Drive is easy and then you can share from there.

If you dont have internet and your people dont have an app like these https://www.computerworld.com/article/3262126/8-essential-android-to-ios-file-transfer-tips.html then you will need to transfer using wireless . But I dont think Apple allows you to transfer to iPhones from Android via bluetooth. So you will need to either get an Android phone or get the files you need onto your iPhone when you have an internet connection.

Perhaps the easiest way would be to put the files you need on a USB stick that you can then attach to Android phone using an OTG cable https://www.samsung.com/au/support/mobile-devices/what-is-an-otg-on-the-go-cable/
Then the user would install the app directly from USB stick and restore the documents from the USB stick too. Some USB sticks can connect directly to some phones.

All the options will require some tech savyness though.

Cheers
Andrew
