Friends,

Thanks to all who participated in the Nassau County AIT Phase 4 meeting at the Peck Center last evening.  The well attended meeting was led by Nassau County Project Manager, George Murray.  We learned about the trail plan including road sections, cross walks and medians.  The local cycling community was well represented with more than a dozen NFBC members including President Scott Kirkwoood.  City Manager Sarah Campbell stopped by for a briefing as did City Commissioner Joyce Tuten and City Commission candidate, Scott Inglis.

The team gathered significant community input.  Some of the concerns we heard:

  1. Will the proposed trail protect trees, especially on Will Hardee?  The project plan is designed to minimize tree removal.
  2. Will the S. 14th St. median improvements provide sufficient access to local business?  Trail planners are looking at this issue.
  3. Are the crosswalks sufficient for safety?  The RRFBs look well placed.
  4. Commissioner Tuten asked the County staff for a sidewalk on the west side of S. 14th from Nectarine to the Walmart.  This would allow neighborhood residents to get to the stores safely without having to cross S. 14th.
  5. Project timeline?  Design will be completed in May and project goes out to bid next Winter for construction starting in late 2027.

The County’s window for receiving comments on the project will remain open for a few days.  Please take a minute to send your comments to George Murray in support of the trail.  (gmu...@nassaucountyfl.com)  Please include your name and address for the record.

Hello Fellow Cyclists,

Tomorrow’s ride promises to be another good one with temps in the upper 60’s to mid 70s with light winds out of the SE from 4-8 mph.

I hope you all had a relatively easy time signing up with the new system.

We will contend with the car show as we begin tomorrow’s ride, but only for the first 3-4 miles (and the return miles).

See you tomorrow,

-JIM

Hello Fellow Cyclists,

Today was a gorgeous day for cycling.  Temps were in the upper 60s to low 70s with a breeze out of the SE.  We had 9 riders and, as far as I know, there were no mechanicals, flats, or falls — so it was a successful ride.

We did have some traffic due to the Car Show when we were close to the Parkway and, as Peter and I returned, I noted the longest line of cars that I’ve ever witnessed on S. Fletcher — a solid line of cars heading south from Bill Melton (public golf course exit) to the traffic light at the Parkway.  That’s one mile of bumper-to-bumper cars.  I recommend that you not drive on the Island this weekend unless you have to!

I did come to V’s Pizza today and found a small, but friendly, group including Joe, Patti, Ted, Lee, John G, Steve R, and Walt (who showed up later).

Thanks for riding with us today,

-JIM

P.S. I remembered on my own to snap a photo at the start!

Hello Potential Monday Riders,

I’m writing today and tomorrow because I am changing the location of the START of the ride due to construction on Ash Street that has closed the intersection by the tracks and the Marina.  Not only does this cause challenges for bikes getting to the start, but for those driving to the start, there are additional challenges with parking.

Therefore, for this Monday only (unless the closure remains for 2 more weeks), we will meet at the western edge of Central Park (by 11th Street) where the Pétanque courts are located.  There is plenty of free parking there.

We’ll still begin the ride at 9am, and I will provide alternative directions at the start that will enable us to return to the regular ride course.

If you have any questions, please feel free to respond to me directly.

Thanks,

-JIM

Good call, Jim. Wish I could join in on the cycling merriment, but as usual on Monday mornings,  I will be “at work” at the Ft Clinch ranger station.

Hope to see y’all there!

Hello Fellow Cyclists,

We had a wonderful ride today around the Island.  There were 11 riders and with the new system, all signed up for 40 miles because that was the ONLY ride distance available.  However, as ride leader, I was able to change the mileage, so I did make changes for Lee, Kathleen, Ted, Philip, and Cheryl.

It was a beautiful day for a ride and, thankfully, there were no mechanicals, flats, or falls.  I did remember to take a photo at each of our rest stops (see attached).

Finally, thanks to all who rode for their flexibility with the location change.

Cycle safely and have fun,

-JIM

Hello Potential Monday Riders,

As was true on the last Monday Marina Ride, I am changing the location of the START of the ride due to construction on Ash Street that has closed the intersection by the tracks and the Marina.  Not only does this cause challenges for bikes getting to the start, but for those driving to the start, there are additional challenges with parking.

Hello All,

It’s still Monday, so not to late for the Monday Marina Ride Report.  There were 20 riders on this gorgeous day.  Folks seemed to be in a good mood and as far as I know, we had another day without incident — no falls, flats, or mechanicals.

We did have to retreat when a train blocked our path by Smurfit and there were a couple of places where roads narrowed due to road work, but our intrepid group were not to be deterred.

I did try to provide an accurate accounting of mileage for each rider, but I must admit that there were too many folks who rode distances other than 40 miles for me to monitor everyone.  So, I did the best I could.

In an effort to please those fellow riders who enjoy fawning over their photos, I tried to attach 3 photos, but it said my email was too long, so I’m sending just one from the start.

Jim, just a note on my ride. I climbed over 1,000 feet at an average speed of 12 mph for 29.5 miles. Who said that Amelia Island is flat!

It was a good ride!
