Christmas Ride Report

All,

‘‘Twas the day of Christmas and to get out of the house,
I went for a bike ride with Kathleen, my beautiful spouse.
Our stockings were not hung by the chimney with care,
For we wore them on our feet against the cool, morning air!

We rode to Main Beach to meet up with our club,
They needed a ride leader and I volunteered to sub.
There we met six bikers all eager to go,
Some were fast, some were medium and some a tad slow.

Our goal today was to catch a glimpse of old St. Nick,
But even with e-bikes that would be quite the trick.
The safety brief was rendered in its usual earnest fashion,
It’s something for which all leaders have a sincere and honest passion.

Then off to the north we rode with a clatter,
To find that old elf whom we heard was getting fatter!
Our first rest stop, of course, was good old Fort Clinch.
And getting there quick, is always a cinch.

After we had rested by sitting on the wall,
I needed to rouse our troop with the two minute call,
Now Sallie, Now Joseph, Now Susan and Don,
On Jim, on Roger, it’s time to roll on!

So off we road to a boat ramp named Dee Dee Bartels,
Who was a shrimp boat captain among her many laurels.
We saw mills and hills and as we rode through town,
And there was our pal Dan L., picking litter off the ground!

We rode on some more and took another rest,
On the chairs at the dog park where we listened to a bark-fest!
Soon it was time to return to our quest,
But catching up to Santa is always an impossible test.

So we headed home charging up South Fletcher,
What a wonderful day, by golly you betcha.
We failed again to catch that jolly old elf,
Who some people say resembles myself!

But trying each year gives us hope and a reason,
To wish everyone on the island a Happy Holiday season!

After reading Peter B’s poem, and considering how much time (and effort) this must require, I now understand why Peter offers to sub (or Kathleen volunteers him) infrequently.

Hello Fellow Cyclists,

Tomorrow is another Joe’s Friday Special ride from Super Corsa to the ferry — 32 miles.  The weather will remain the same with a starting temperature of a sunny 62 degrees and a wind out of the west at 5 mph.  Should be another ideal day weather-wise.  

Hoping to see a good number of you at the start after having a day of celebration (and rest for some).

Love the poem and look forward to seeing all of you in four weeks.  The weather in St. Louis, MO is a balmy 65 and we are heading out on a ride.  We were able to ride on Christmas Eve too.  Fingers crossed before heading south that we can get some other rides in to be able to keep up with some of you.  Belated Merry Christmas and Happy and save New Year.
