IIRC, the original bare bones Altair contained just a 2 or 3 slot MB. 
Optional, I believe you could order a 6 or 9 slot board, but by default, it just came with that smaller board. 

FWIW, that was nearly 45 years ago and I opted for the 9 slot IMSAI.

Close. The original Altair had a board capable of holding four S-100 connectors. You could order one, two, three or four. If you needed more, you could daisy-chain more four-slot boards.
