Action Alert: Speak up for Braddock Rd Bike Lanes

Hi everyone, 

The Braddock Road Corridor Improvements (bike lanes) project has been posted to the Traffic and Parking Board docket (item number 9 starting on page 35). Speak up at the Traffic & Parking Board on Monday, February 23 at 7 PM. The Docket Report has been posted (item number 9 starting on page 35). Speakers will be called in the order they signed up. You can speak virtually by signing up via this link or sign up at the in-person meeting at City Council Chambers, Room 1305 at Del Pepper Community Resource Center, 4850 Mark Center Dr, Alexandria, VA. 

Given the amount of community interest, this meeting will likely be long and the project is the last on the agenda so I estimate the first speaker won't likely be called until after 8 pm. When item 9 begins, staff will likely make a presentation and then Board will ask questions. Once that step is complete, the Board will begin the public hearing part by calling names in the order they signed up, usually five at a time so unless you are the first person to sign up, you will have some warning.

If you have not spoken to the board before, here are a few tips. 

• You will have to to three minutes to speak which roughly the amount of time it takes to read a sheet of paper (don't feel you need to speak the entire time) 
• Start by stating you support the staff recommendation 
• Make no more the three points 
• Give positive, fact-supported statements about why you support the project
• Try to make a unique, personal statement about why this project matters to you and your family 
• Avoid personal attacks

It can seem intimidating to speak but remember the Board members is made up of our fellow neighbors and there will be plenty of project supporters in attendance.

Thanks for sending this out and advocating for the project. If built, these new bike lanes on Braddock will be a tremendous safety and convenience improvement for bikers, pedestrians, and vehicles.

Here’s a link to the Brooks bike bus kids using this corridor and nearby street to get to school. There are also lots of kids walking/biking to GW, not to mention the metro station, Satelite campus of ACHS, and the two trails, along with Commonwealth and Mount Vernon. This corridor is vital for connectivity for so many groups! Please speak up in support of complete streets!
